Please check out the TechHUB at the Bookstore, UC Davis Bookstore where you can view what is available to students.

I received an e-mail from the Bookstore saying that they were offering discounts for students but I think it's limited time only or as long as supplies last.

You can also get a 10% discount from the Apple Store if you want a Mac ( (I believe it was 10% but I may be remembering incorrectly.) Here is the direct link to the UC Davis online Apple Store.

UC Davis Apple Store

Quote:
Who is Eligible To Purchase
The following education individuals are eligible to purchase through the Apple Store for Education individuals:

* Faculty or staff member of a public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States
* Student currently attending or accepted into a public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States
* Parent purchasing on behalf of their child who is a student currently attending or accepted into public or private Higher Education Institution in the United States

Purchase Quantity
Faculty, Staff and Students purchasing from the Apple Store for Education Individuals will be allowed to purchase the following quantities of product per academic school year:

1. Desktop: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
2. Mac mini: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
3. Notebook: One (1) may be purchased per academic year
4. Display: A maximum of two (2) may be purchased per academic year
5. Software: A maximum of two (2) per software title may be purchased per academic year
6. Apple TV: There is no limit on the quantity of Apple TV purchases per academic year
7. iPod: There is no limit on the quantity of iPod purchases per academic year
OR you can just buy straight from the UC Davis bookstore - it's up to you. The model I wanted wasn't available on the bookstore so I went for the Apple Store of Education instead, though.

ipods aren't exactly required for school, so why would they be something discounted for education?

More people use Windows at UCD. You'll see a good amount of Macs, but there's at least three times more Windows-based laptops... mostly 'cause it's A LOT cheaper! =]. I do love Leopard, though. I just wish Apple would give us more options for customizing the hardware inside the laptop like Dell and HP ($2000 for a laptop? No thanks!)

They give discounts for Dell computers, if you want to go the PC route.
link

I've had horrible experiences with Dell in the past so I went with the Mac. Had they given discounts on, say, an Alienware, I would have gotten a PC instead.
