(1)My D is applying to UCSC. She took few UC approved courses from <Apex virtual high school>. On the UC application, the courses from <Apex> didn't appear in drop-down list. Should she enter manually <Course title> or <Transcript Abbreviation> on the application?

E.g from https://doorways.ucop.edu ...

For Apex learning::
Course Title:: English IV (Apex Learning)
Transcript Abbreviation:: English IV : British and World literature

(2)She took an elective (category g) from BYU. This elective is NOT UC approved. But, it is on her transcript. Should she put this elective under BYU or under her high school? Will UC consider this course at the time of calculating her GPA?

From Enter Your High School select "In the U.S. (not CA)", then from the State/U.S. Territory. box, pick "Washington", type "apex" in School Name to pick up "APEX LEARNING,481142-1,SEATTLE,WA" and go from there.

If her school approved the BYU course to be "equivalent," she can get credit through a process called "principal certification." If that is the case (her principal deemed that she has completed the equivalent course of what is offered at her high school), then she would list the course as if it is from her high school (because she received credit from her high school). Just a note though, "principal certification" does not work for lab science or visual/performing arts courses.

Thanks MsSun. My D did the same thing as you suggested for Apex high school. There is no drop-down list for Apex courses on UC and CSU application even though the Apex learning is an approved online provider. Could it be because Apex Learning is not in California?

Yup, just enter in the classes manually and make sure to match everything to the listing on the Doorways website.
