App. Question: Personal Hardship

I wrote my personal statements on two things that are not hardships, because I feel that these better represent who I am. However, I did have a hardship my freshman year that also helps to explain my low grades that year. Is this something that would be acceptable to mention in part 3 of the personal statement? Would it help my chances?

For reference, I am applying to Cal, LA, and SD.

with a sub 3.0 Frosh year, you definitely want to write about it for the top 3. But, ask your GC for help editing bcos you don't want to look like you are making excuses.

What kind of style am I supposed to write in though?

It's unclear to me whether part 3 of the statement is supposed to be an explanatory note or a full blown essay.
