Help!! What if you are a FOB?

Do UC seriously care if you came late, meaning you did not start out native, and had a bit disadvantage? Would that affect my chance of getting in?
And what is the meaning of this(straight from UC website)?

They want to know how much you qualify for in-state residency. If yes, it confers advantages. Not if you moved to CA from Oregon when you were three -- that wouldn't matter.

it won't hurt you if you came late. because you're a pretty girl and from taiwan LOL

anyways the dates are for in-state residency. If you've been here long enough to qualify as in-state, you get advantages (in admissions and tuition).

So in-state residency is only good for tuition? Would UC not see a candidate as "had a harder time" or "in disadvantage" if she came here just 4 years ago?

^^^^

In-state is for tuition purposes and for admission consideration only. It doesnt' look like it's asking applicants where they came from. So, if someone indicates that they came to Calif 4 years ago, that wouldn't necessarily suggest that they came from some bad situation...they may have come from Texas.

It's simple: Have you lived in California for 12 months or more? If you have, answer "yes". If you have not, then answer "no".

And then, enter what date you moved to California.

Like they said, in-state tuition is lower, and in-state students have priority for admissions over out-of-state students. The definition of in-state student is someone who has lived in California for at least the previous 12 months, hence why are they asking you that question.

The essay is the place to tell them about the obstacles you have overcome.
