People have ben saying that you can either choose to take the ACT or SAT. I was wondering if colleges would prefer one over the other. For example, if someone was competiting with another person to get into UCLA and someone got a 36 while the other person got a 2400 on their SAT and they both have the same extracurricular activities, would UCLA choose the person with the 2400 over the other person?

Colleges No Not Care.....and in particular, the UCs do not since they value gpa much more highly.

If everything is equal (GPA, etc) a UC would likely accept both applicants. The number of acceptances isn't "that rigid". UC's accept a lot more than what actually enrolls.

There are people who still adamantly believe that colleges value the SAT more highly than the ACT. However, their reasons for believing this tend to boil down to "the wrong people score highly on the ACT therefore it is worse", so I wouldn't listen to them much.

The UC System has a conversion table which takes the SAT score or ACT score and converts it into a "UC Score". It really doesn't matter which one you take but be sure to take ACT with writing and you still need SAT II's.
