What is Uci's strongest field of study? engineering? If not, how is their engineering department?

There's a difference - what's their strongest field vs. what they're known for.

In California, they are definitely known as a bio school. But their strongest areas are arts and the humanities. I believe they are a top 2-3 school in dance, and they are the best school in the nation in literary criticism. But the majority of the students are in the sciences.

Yes, it's all about literature at UCI.

It's a nice place. There's a huge park in the middle and all the buildings are pretty modern.

Oh yeah, I got rejected from UCLA, just felt like informing everyone.

I knew I shouldn't have applied for engineering.

Can't say I'm fond of Irvine, the city (I grew up there). It's track housing and symmetry and not a lot more. On the plus side, Irvine is in the middle of Orange County, which means you're 10 minutes from the beach, 10 minutes from Disneyland, about an hour from San Diego and a couple hours from Los Angeles. But UCI is a pretty great school, and since you got invited to CHP, I'd give it some serious thought. They seem to give a lot of personal attention to CHP kids, so if I had a choice between going to Harvard as a regular undergrad and UCI through CHP, it wouldn't be difficult for me to choose UCI.

A couple hours from Los Angeles? Maybe during rush hour.

Uh, i think it's a bit further than 10 minutes from Disneyland... maybe 25 min.
