making the assumption of a standard
100-90 = A
90-80 = B
80-70 = C
70-60 = D
<60 = F
the idea is that someone who gets an 88% in a class isnt the same as someone who gets an 81%, yet both would get a B, or a 3.0 to their GPA. by adding +/-, you can refine the method, so a B+ is going to go in as a 3.3 while that B- will give you a 2.7. where does a B begin and a B+ end? its kinda subjective. maybe 88%, maybe 87%, maybe a certain % of students will fall into the grade distribution, regardless of the actual grade (curve).
all the UCs do this to my knowledge, not CSU though.
Also, A+ does not = 4.3. so you cant get above 4.0 for any reason, honors, EC, research while at college.
