Rejected. Is there any point in appealing a School of Art rejection? I feel like art majors (and other portfolio-required majors) fall under different sets of rules than every other major.

I'm sorry :( I'm not sure about appeals. you bring up a good point about the portfolio thing. I know UCLA looks for something VERY specific in their portfolios.... heres a video which helped me tremendously when applying.

deviantART chat with UCLA - YouTube

Long video but sooo helpful. maybe it can help with your appeal and how to explain your artwork.

do you mind if i take a look at your portfolio? :)

    bokehuynh's Portfolio on Artician

Of course I didn't submit all of these but I am actually surprised I didn't get in.

I was also rejected but for D|MA. I've been sad for the last few hours since I found out. UCLA was my number one if I didn't get in, I was going to automatically go to CC without looking at any other schools. Still planning to do that, but of course not going down without an appeal.

In terms of appealing, I feel like since we stressed so much about our portfolio to begin with, we can show new things in a form of a letter since we'll have a chance. Sorry if that's confusing, but just know I'll be doing it as well. It doesn't say that appeals are restricted to any major.

i really liked your portfolio!! I'm surprised you were rejected :(

i guess nobody knows the secret

So in your appeal you're just going to explain your artwork/yourself as an artist?

To be honest, UCLA loves conceptual art. this is true with USC as well. I was unaware of this until i went in for a portfolio review with USC. Before that i had all traditional art (portraits and still lives) and nothing really creative.

I then changed it up and used my personal experiences to influence my art. I used new materials which were untraditional such as wax and fire.

I was accepted! (For the fine arts or studio arts, not DMA but my friend was so I'm really proud of both of us)

I was really shocked considering I'm pretty sure at this point, RISD turned me down or wait-listed me and it's much harder to get into UCLA arts than RISD... well anyway, I still have my fingers crossed for RISD but my parents now really want me to go to UCLA.

Don't like to share my art on CC, but basically I had technical observational studies, and around 3-4 quite unorthodox pieces. If anyone really wants to see they can PM me.

But fingers crossed - I really hope this isn't a glitch.

PS: Anywhere I can get more information about the classes with UCLA? Or anyone I can talk to? I love art but I also like to be involved with music activities. Wondering if I could do that for GenEd.

Can you PM your portfolio :) id really like to see it :) :)

Sorry bump - does anyone know what Arts major people do their first year for GenEd? I'm aware there's drawing class or colour theory I think, but I'm really curious as in to how much art education we get our first year. I'd still really like to transfer to a full-art school like RISD, and if UCLA is all GenEd first year with barely any Arts, I think I'll have a slim chance.

    Thanks

@Nagooya - ok haah need to wait though I have my files everywhere @_@

If I submit my portfolio, will any of you consider looking at it and explain why I may not have been accepted? Yes I must admit that now that i realize UCLA loves conceptual art and the like, mine was not conceptual at all. Though it was symbolic to me in many ways I guess. My stats brought me down, I know, though I did have quite a lot of experience in the design world in terms of web designing, and graphics.

Hi, seresterias I will look if you post and compare with my friend's in terms of the types of stuff you put in there. May I ask, where else did you apply to?

I'm not sure how stats would have affected you too greatly unless your grades were really really mediocre or not great at all. I figured this was really an emphasis on portfolio

    i can look too!

Thank you for the replies! Here's a link to my portfolio:
    Fiona Zhou

Keep in mind that UCLA accepts 7-10 pieces so I only submitted a few of the ones in my portfolio.

My stats were 3.74 GPA, 1810 SAT, 27 ACT.
Very, very mediocre but I really believed that the portfolio would count more than my stats would.
    Again, thank you so much.
