MAE102 statics and strenght of materials
MAE 102 is not statics and strengths. MAE 101 is statics and very elementary strengths. MAE 156A (not required for aero) is more advanced strengths of materials and solid mechanics.

MAE 102 is dynamics or non-rigid and rigid bodies.

Quote:
MAE 182A math of engineering
Materials science and engineering 104
MAE 105 thermodynamics OR Computer science 31
Difficulty:

MAE 182A: 5/10
MSE 104: 5/10
MAE 105A: 6.5/10
MAE 105D: 9/10

Many defense and aerospace engineering job / projects require Security Clearance, but not all do. Which mean you must be US Citizen. There are different tier of clearance. You need a company sponsor to get that and it is lengthy and costly. Top Secret Clarence is good for 5 years, secret 10 years etc. If you got it, it is worth GOLD and usually receives higher salary. During the investigation, they literately call; visit your work site, home, churches etc and look at EVERYTHING. If it is your first job, they probably will call the U. So don't lie, as they can even request for sealed doc.

Security Clearances help in obtaining a job

How would you rank these courses:

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 107/107L -- Introduction to Modeling and Analysis of Dynamic Systems/Laboratory 4

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 131A -- Intermediate Heat Transfer 4

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 157 -- Basic Mechanical Engineering Laboratory 4

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 156A -- Strength of Materials 4

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 171A -- Introduction to Feedback and Control Systems 4

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 183 -- Introduction to Manufacturing Processes 4

How crowded are office hours? I've heard it said many times, "go to office hours," so I'm under the impression that lots of students take advantage of this resource.

Are the professors almost always willing to help you clarify any questions you may have concerning a subject matter that's not well understood? I ask this because I have a physics teacher here that tells us to go "shoot ourselves," or that we should be "shot" for not understanding some concepts he covers. I would hope that the professors at UCLA don't go to that extent to ridicule their students, or make it hard for their students to approach them with questions.

I don't want to generalize, but no one ever goes to professors' office hours in Computer Science unless it's regarding a grading dispute, or it's for CS 31/32/33 where the specifications aren't quite clear. I can't speak for the other engineering departments, so I'll just leave it at that...

MAE 131A: 5/10
MAE 157: 10/10
MAE 156A: 7/10
MAE 171A: 7/10
MAE 183: 1/10

Note that a lot of the rankings are purely on personal experience and can change depending on which professor is teaching the course. MAE 131A is considered one of the hardest courses so it should be 10/10, but the professor that taught it last quarter was ridiculously easy. MAE 157 would be lower depending on which professor teaches it.

I think 107/L is the one of the worst in your list. You'll have the advantage in 107, because by the time you take it, it might be with people in the catalog year graduating in 2010.

CS 31 was replaced with MAE 20, and 107 has a lot of Matlab involved. Really makes a lot of sense, right?

And a question for zero: Is 157 that bad, besides the length of labs per week? What is involved n the labs? I think that 171A is just like 107 is you don't like Matlab. Also, is the manufacturing class that easy? Sounds like a lot of modeling to me.

Office hours in the MAE dept. It really depends on which professor it is. When you step in, some professors are delighted that you came by. While some professors are like... *** you stupid or something?!...I went over this in class WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK A QUESTION! I'm just exaggerating, probably only 1-2 professors are like that in the dept

Can someone who's taken CS 33 before rank the difficulty of the each project?

Although the CS 33 projects change from quarter to quarter, Projects 1 and 2 are 3/10 in difficulty while Projects 6 and 7 are 10/10 in difficulty.

Hi, I just got accepted to UCLA (CS) for this fall, and I’m thinking about taking a few classes there this summer. Here is what I’ve taken that transfers over: MATH 31A, MATH 31B, MATH 32A, MATH 32B, MATH 33A, MATH 33B, PHYSICS 1A/L, PHYSICS 1B/L, PHYSICS 1C/L, ENGCOMP 3, MATH 61, COM SCI 31, COM SCI 32, COM SCI 33, and COM SCI M51A. I’ve also taken two GE’s: Art History 1 and sociology 1.

My question is this: what classes would you recommend for this summer in order to get my feet wet?

Also--I remember reading somewhere that CS majors are required to minor in something? What minor would you recommend to someone who’s interested in studying artificial intelligence? I’d appreciate any help.

TIA

I would recommend you get more GEs out of your way first. I strongly discourage you from taking upper-division engineering classes during summer sessions, because six weeks is way too fast.

CS majors don't have that "technical minor" anymore -- it's now a "technical breadth" requirement which everyone in HSSEAS takes. There's no minor that favors Artificial Intelligence; that's what CS 161 is for.

The cognitive science minor helps to provide an excellent background for careers in cognitive science and related fields, such as artificial intelligence and human factors. [...]

flopsy, what CS elective classes would you recommend?
