Too bad Smallberg doesn't teach CS 31 in the winter.

Hey do any of you guys know if Math 33B is needed for EE 101? It says this on the website...
Enforced Requisites: (course 1 or Physics 1C) and ((Math 32A and 32B) or (33A and 33B))

It's like you could have either math series completed...

I took EE 1 this quarter and understand why 32A and 32B were needed for EE 1, so I assumed they are needed for EE 101, but what about Math 33B? I ask because I am probably going to be taking Math 33B at the same time and am not sure if I need to already know the math for the class.

could someone help me decipher this from the announcement...it's from the list of major classes:
Quote:
...two departmental breadth courses (Electrical Engineering 100 and Materials Science and Engineering 104 - if one or both of these courses are taken as part of the technical breadth requirement, students must select a replacement upper division course or courses that may be any technical course from within the school - except for [MAE] 156A - or, by petition, from outside the school)
does this mean you have to take an additional course if you take either EE100 or MSE104?

also, if anyone here knows anything about AE, i need some advice about this potential schedule for the fall (i will be 2nd year AE):

MAE 101
MAE 154S
Math 32B and 33B - or if i were to take just one, which one?
Physics 4BL? - not sure if i should or shouldn't if i have four other classes

oh, and would anyone happen to know why AEs don't take MAE 94? don't we do CAD stuff too...?

If anyone is interested:

Latin honor's is assigned automatically based on all course work completed. Both the cumulative and total upper division required GPA cutoffs must be met. Also a minimum of 80 UC units must have been completed and the total upper division Engineering GPA must be a minimum of 3.250.

Degrees conferred during the 08-09 academic year must meet the following GPA cutoffs for both the cumulative and total upper division GPAs:

* Cum Laude 3.618
* Magna Cum Laude 3.845
* Summa Cum Laude 3.879

Degrees conferred during the 07-08 academic year must meet the following GPA cutoffs for both the cumulative and total upper division GPAs:

* Cum Laude 3.615
* Magna Cum Laude 3.742
* Summa Cum Laude 3.892

Yes, since they are part of the curriculum anyways, you just replace them with any MAE electives. This covers the department breadth course requiremnt.

I don't know how you're going to take flight mechanics, unless you started out taking 103 last Fall. Looking at your schedule, you probably didn't. The requirements are 150A, 150B.

32B is more challenging than 33B. I can't give you any advice which one to take, as both are good classes. Just take the class you can get into.

101 is easy, but don't underestimate the concepts. You might get tested in some of the elementary concepts during interviews from 101. You also need the basic knowledge (deflection, shear & moment diagram, failure criteria, etc.) for 156A, so don't delay too much that after 101.

Replace 154S with a GE or another MAE class you qualify for, and you'll be okay.

quick question about classes for fall 08

my upcoming schedule is going to look like this:

physics 4bl
math 33b
ee1
cs 35L

I think thats only like 12-13 units total, but it seems like a beast. The engineering curriculum suggests taking a GE along with this but it seems like that would be too much. Should I stick with those 4 classes or should I add a GE on top of it? Or would that be pretty hard to accomplish?

it depends on how much you think you can handle since only you know your own capabilities.

i had a pretty similar schedule but with eem16 as well. that quarter was probably my most overwhelming one so far but it was because i pledged that quarter.

in terms of difficulty/time (IMO):
-4bl: takes up the most time. but can be significantly reduced...
-math33b: pretty easy and the curve was extremely high..
-ee1: hardest out of the 4.
-cs35L: the first four weeks were the hardest. it gets a lot easier afterward. but you might see yourself putting in a lot more time in the beginning of the quarter.

Exams were easy too for them. Maybe I slightly exaggerated the grading. Probably if you want a solid B or higher, you should get those scores.

Any lower than that, you're below average for FALL quarter (according to the past).

It's easy to get scores on projects now (winter and spring), especially if you're a girl. You just have to go up to any guy who's CS, CSE and ask them for "help" on a project. They'll "help you" do the project and you'll get a 100 . The midterm and final is designed to be easier too, so it's "easier" to get As and Bs during these quarters.
So you're recommending that I should take CS 31 in the Winter/Spring than in the Fall? But that means I have to take it with Rohr for Winter.

take it in the spring with smallberg. you're definitely guaranteed a higher grade in the spring than in the fall.

I would but that means I would have to wait until the following winter quarter to take CS 32. I don't plan on being around that long. Besides, Prof. Eddie Kohler will be teaching CS 31 in Spring '09.

I have to make a decision: Smallberg in the fall vs. Rohr in the spring?

Hey, I'll probably take Math 31A in the fall and I don't want to go on in a 'mental vacation' so I want to get ahead during this summer. I was thinking on purchasing the textbook for the course, is it really the "Single Variable Calculus" by Rogawski textbook?

Another thing, I'll also be taking CS31 in the fall, so I also want to get ahead since I'll be competing with a bunch of experienced computer science ppl, which textbook do you guys use for C++?

PS: I already checked the registrar's schedule website and the name of the textbooks are still not available.

I believe they switched to Big C++ with Smallberg this quarter, although Absolute C++ should do the trick as well.
