Sorry for my absence, I've been settling into my new apartment and working 60-hour weeks.

That's CS 130: Software Engineering. The course covers the software development cycle, design patterns, programming methodologies, and principles of software as a product and a service. It's also a practicum where you spend the quarter working in teams on a standalone software application, either from an industry sponsor or from an open-source project.

Engr 183/185 comments

I'm looking for a few responses to this question - anything would help me out.

If you took Engineering 183 or 185...
1) Which one did you take?
2) What did you like about it?
3) What did you dislike about it? What would you change to make it better? (Please don't say "less writing" as now it fulfills the Writing II requirement so that can't change.)
4) How were the TAs in your section? What did you like/dislike about them?

Thanks in advance.

1. Engr. 183

2. I liked that once you were done with your portion of the group research paper, you were practically done with the whole class.

3. I disliked the time, 8:00AM. It really wasn't too bad. The papers were an easy 'A' as long as you supported your claims.

4. My TA was nice and an easy grader. I think they are all easy graders.

Just look on bruinwalk.com for more reviews of the class.

  1. Engineering 183
  2. Easy A
  3. The 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM time slot, and the textbook, which was barely used in the course.
  4. The TA didn't do anything, besides tracking the progress of our groups' final reports.

1) 183
2) one of the easiest classes I've taken
3) always 8am, and they take attendance
and regarding the amount of writing, I think this class had less writing than my writing II class (I took it before at community college) and my eng comp 3 class
4) My TA was pretty awesome. easy grader and very chill. but he suggested that we take the 185 class (even though we were already in the 183 class). I think he said it had to do with systems engineering? but I don't know anyone who's taken engr 185 so I don't know.

hey flopsy, still working at activision?

the professor who teaches engr185 seemed so boring...when he came to talk about systems engineering in our cs101 seminar. after the presentation, i still had no idea what systems engineering was.

Hi,

I had a question about cs31 and cs32. In which of these courses is Friends, Overloaded Operators, and Arrays in Classes first covered? I'm a transfer student who'll be attending the engineering school in the fall and I need to know this to update my study shedule.

Thanks!

No, though I may come back to Activision in the future, i.e. after grad school.

Friends are covered lightly (if at all) in the middle of CS 32. Overloaded operators and arrays in classes are covered towards the end of CS 31.

1) 183
2) You can BS on the midterms and final and still get an A. Those exams are basically how much you can BS in 2-3 hrs. Also the lectures by Dr. Browne (he lectures 2-3 times). I liked his "Red Asphalt" type of approach to teaching ethics.
3) The course time at 8:00am, and how the lectures compose of a history lesson through the first few weeks. I actually don't remember much of the lectures cause it was so difficult to stay awake.
4) All the TA's are pretty cool except for the one female TA that was there a few quarters ago. My friends did not like her very much.

They have increased the workload in 183 because of Writing II. I was LMAO hearing how much work my friend was doing in the Spring 08 183 compared to my course in spring 07.

I think in just about every project spec in CS32 had the instruction "The word friend must never be used in your program" The professors really didn't want us to use that functionality.
