flopsy yea ure right that all EE majors have to take CS31... BUT the CE options have to take more CS (like CS33), so I guess they are doing it to give them a head start? I wasn't sure if I believed him either, but he showed me his sched, and he is in DIS 3D... o well =[

btw yay for post #1337 with the new rankings ;], but boo since it looks like we dropped in EE/CE =[

EDIT! o yea i wanted to ask... who do u think will be teaching CS31/CS32 next quarter? I was able to get a spot with Rohr this quarter in CS31, but its really late in the day (4-6pm), its a 4th class, and i wud prefer Smallberg...
if smallberg is teaching CS31 next quarter then I could prob hold off on CS until next quarter, but if he's only teaching CS32 next quarter... then I should probably take CS31 now and have him for CS32 next quarter yea?

Is it necessary to take CS31 in freshman year, or can you wait until sophomore-much later?

It's usually Prof. Smallberg who teaches CS 31 and Prof. Rohr who teaches CS 32 during Winter Quarter.

Yes, it is necessary to take CS 31 in freshman year because the sophomore-level and upper-division CS courses all require CS 32/33. If you're a non-CS, non-EECE major you might be able to pull it off though.

The SEAS Cafe is across from the ESUC lounge on the fifth floor of Boelter Hall.

How does the most recent avg. UC GPA compare with that of the past year? If possible, do you have these GPAs for both general admissions and engineering-only?

hello there,

Im part of l&s but I'm really interested in taking an engineering course next quarter, because i want to see if its the right field.

Would approval from the professor to enroll in the course, override the out-of-school restriction?

thanks

That's the sprit...

Yes, approval from the professor (in the form of a coveted Permission to Enroll number, or PTE) over-rides the out-of-school enrollment restriction. However, you'd have a hard time getting that approval if you're taking someone else's legitimate spot in an impacted course like CS 31. Furthermore, you need to demonstrate to the professor that you need to be officially enrolled and taking the exams, as opposed to merely auditing the course by being a spectator at his/her lectures. Which specific engineering course are you interested in taking?

flopsy, how would you rate the difficulty of cs 1 (cong) and cs 31 (rohr)? also what material does each course specifically cover?

I never took CS 1, which is a seminar course to enlighten CS/CSE/EE freshmen on the current state of Computer Science in academia, in case they're planning on research/grad school. CS 31 is an introductory course to C++ and general computer science concepts in preparation for CS 32. I would rate CS 31 a 6/10 in difficulty.
