What's the difference between IR and global studies?

Also, when people mention working for federal agencies, what exactly does a person do? I would expect that they wouldn't be the actual agents that go out and do stuff on tv, but does anyone know what they actually do? Or is this a secret or something -_-

Hi UCLAri,
I read somewhere that you got into both UCLA and Berkeley . . . what made you choose UCLA over Berkeley? Would you say that a UCLA undergrad has significantly less opportunities than a Berkeley undergrad?

lawlzatyou,

Global studies is more of a study about the international community at large, and IR is a study of how nation-states interact with one another.

It's impossible to say what federal workers do per se because the jobs are so varied.

emilyburd,

Sure. I know a few grad students who went to UCSD from UCLA.

mrpotatoehead,

I don't think so, no. The departments are similar in size, rank, and both breadth and depth. The UC system also has very standardized programs (study abroad, etc.) that each campus is able to tap into. You should be fine at UCLA.

Is it possible to finish upperdivision work in 1 year for poli sci? I'm thinking of IR or AG as concentrations. What do you suggest (if you think it's possible) that I do? How many classes would i need to take each quarter?

Looking for unimpacted majors

How can I find out what major's at UCLA aren't impacted? My daughter wants to go to law school, but she needs to get an undergrad degree first. She has several other interests besides Political Science, but we don't really know where to start.

Hi UCLAri,

I'm transferring to UCLA this Fall 2009 as a Japanese major and planning to minor in Accounting. I wanted to ask, do you know anything about the Japanese Placement Test? Since I'm transferring they require me to take the placement test, so do you know anything such as like the type of questions they ask and the forms of evaluation. I asked the guy working at the Asian Languages and Cultures room in Royce Hall but he didn't seem to answer me that well, or rather he didn't know how to answer me (he looked like a student too). I took up to Japanese 6 at my community college (De Anza College) but we use a different book than Genki so I don't know if its at the same level or if it teaches about the same material since our book seems to be really old and some stuff might be outdated. It's the Learn Japanese New College Text ones by John Young and Kimiko Nakajima-Okano. I'm concerned because if (god forbid) I don't place into Japanese 100A and get placed into something lower, I have to wait a whole year to take Japanese 100A, then I will finish the 100A-B-C sequence by end of my senior year, but according to the Japanese major I need 2 more quarters after that for some major requirements, meaning I have to stay the succeeding summer and fall, and I would much rather not do that if I'm only missing 2 classes =\.

What do you think I should do as far as preparation for the placement test since I'm taking it during Week 0 before fall quarter begins? Perhaps I should take a look at the Genki books and learn to make friends with flash cards and memorize vocabulary and Kanji? (though Kanji isn't much of a problem, since I'm Chinese I can usually understand what it means but can't read it in Japanese yet) What other suggestions do you have?

Also I, too, am interested in the EAP to Japan. I'm still not sure how long I want to do it; ideally I'd like to study abroad for a year in Japan but right now only thing holding me back is if the classes will transfer back to UCLA. Since I said I would be minoring in Accounting too I'm concerned about whether or not the university in Japan will have classes mirroring the Accounting classes also. As far as the Japanese classes I'll be taking the fulfill my major, I'm not worrying about those; they will most likely have them in Japanese universities, so my main concerns are the Accounting classes, and exactly how much more the cost of living would be Japan as opposed in LA. If you have any feedback about this please kindly reply

Have the bookstores stocked the books for the coming quarter yet? I'd go check myself but since I don't have classes at the moment it's kind of out of the way...

Also, can anyone give a quick account of what the language placement tests are like, specifically for Japanese and/or Korean? I'm wondering what I should expect as far as writing.

Political Science w/ specialization in International Relations

I was reading in the catalog that for those majoring in poli sci (like myself) you can do this joint major with International Relations. Does this actually exist or do you only get the "concentration" in IR when you're taking upper division courses?

PSCI Transfer pre-reqs

So I am apply for fall transfer 2010 as a political science major, I am going to have done:

TAP
IGETC
3.6 GPA

As for the pre-reqs:
I was going to take three in the spring to make a total of 4 but the school cancelled one of the classes then brought it back but they still don't have a teacher so I haven't signed up for it would I be ok if I had everything done but only had three out of the possible four pre-reqs?
