ekn111,
Not nearly as bad/funny. Just bad.
nikkei325i,
I recommend it wholeheartedly, despite my bad experience.

Bad experience? Please elaborate...
Just to note, I am not the best public speaker and I tend to get pretty shy at times. Do you think this will negatively affect me?

Which lower division course do you recommend for Japanese?
I want to take Asian 60 (Intro. to Buddhism) with Poli Sci 40 in the summer, but it seems the reading workload will be too overwhelming...

nikkei,
You'll be fine. I had a bad experience because my placement was really bad. Most people do a lot better than I did.
Bruintastic,
Take anything with Plutschow for an easy A and a fun experience. Oh, and Japanese film is a lot of fun.

UCLAri,
I recently found out that I passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 3. Berkeley's website states that "Advanced Japanese A" is open to those who passed Level 3. I'm assuming this means I won't have to take a placement exam.
The question is, what can passing the JLPT do for me at UCLA? |

As far as I know, nothing. But I never bothered trying to have my 2 count for much of anything.
I'd e-mail the dept. and ask.

Hey UCLAri! I appreciate your taking time to read through all these and giving such solid advice. I myself have a friend who is attending UCSD in the IR/PS masters program. He taught English in Japan, is focusing on East Asia in his studies, and is leet in virtually everything he does. I would like your appraisal: Is this guy awesome, uber-awesome, or just kinda awesome. It's a matter of life and death, so get back to me asap!

Well, I don't want to speak too effusively for this gentleman, but...he is pretty darn cool. |

UCLAri, I signed up for a seminar with Professor Lohmann, but since the class time changed, I am probably unable to take it. She offered me PS 199- 4 units with a 25-30 page paper. Do you have any experience with this? That sounds really overwhelming and I wouldn't know where to start...

I've written a few 25-30 pagers. Unless you're willing to put in at least a few hours a day on the paper, do NOT take a 199. It's a lot of work.

Is there an official process to become "prepolitical science"? And does it ensure you spots for lower div classes?

Hey UCLAri, did u do research as an undergrad? I'm looking into doing policy related research next quarter and wondering how it works. I'm a declared public affairs (public policy) minor.
