what do you think of uc santa cruz? Do you think that school is a lot more difficult to get a good gpa for transfer? Right now i'm deciding btw ucsc and ucm. What are the sterotypes in uc merced?

How are minorities treated here? is it generally more liberal/conserative ? Do you know everyone after like 2 months (not sure if already answered)? I checked the population, merced has less students than my high school lol.

JC to UC is easier.. I guess since they get 'priority.'

However, I am skeptical because I looked at UCLA's transfer stats yesterday for 2007 and the difference in gpas between students transfering from UC's and those from JC's was like a .5 difference. I would not call this priority. I might be missing something though.

If you meet eligibility, your supposed to be admitted. If not, not a good chance, but its worth an appeal.

Hi, I got into uc merced and was looking around for more info about it, other than what the uc had on its website. I stumbled upon the thread and morecowbell's responses have more than helped.

My question for morecowbell is concerning premed at the school.

1)Is there any program at the school for premed students?

2)Do you know any students that have gotten into med school from uc merced.

3) What made you switch major from bio to eng to psych, i read on one of the other posts that you were interested in med, are you still pursuing that? since I got in as a bio major so I was wondering why you'd change if you were interested in going to med school.

"Is it easier to transfer from Merced or a JC?"
JC...inless your on the Shared experince program.

1)Is there any program at the school for premed students?
I'm pre-med myself. Hello fellow future Dr. Theres a series of community service classes you can take for a unit credit here, reallly help build an application (ie work for blood bank, build animal shelters etc.) Also, theres alot of reserch available to you....which will become a MAJOR plusss when it comes time to med-appliactions. Some kids have even gotten published in scientific journals here.

2)Do you know any students that have gotten into med school from uc merced.
I know of one, he got into UCSF. not too many others, b.c we've had about 60 kids graduate so far(transfer kids)....first senior class in next year

3) What made you switch major from bio to eng to psych, i read on one of the other posts that you were interested in med, are you still pursuing that? since I got in as a bio major so I was wondering why you'd change if you were interested in going to med school.

I changed because I wanted in increase my chances at med school. WOW, you wont hear this from counslers here but...if you want to help your med school odds out, pick an easy major. I relized that if I was a Psychology major, and i had a 3.7-3.9 I would be a MUCHHHH stronger applicant that some1 with a 3.6 who was a biology major. Biology majors are a dime a dozen with respect to med school, and upper div. Bio classes pretty much kill your GPA, which in turn kill your med school chances.

"what do you think of uc santa cruz? Do you think that school is a lot more difficult to get a good gpa for transfer? Right now i'm deciding btw ucsc and ucm. What are the sterotypes in uc merced?"

UCSC...first thing that comes to my mind is WEEEEEEED. Although, that may sound cool...i mean "its weed dude" its not what everyone wants all the time in a college enviernment, and thats pretty much what you get in UCSC (you can smoke weed in front of cops there btw and not go to jail..)

"How are minorities treated here? is it generally more liberal/conserative ? Do you know everyone after like 2 months (not sure if already answered)? I checked the population, merced has less students than my high school lol."

Well, after we are finnished stoning them they pretty much fit in...lol jk :-P They fit in fine here...for the most part this place is left wing...which is the polor opposite of the surrounding area.

It is indeed true that weed is available at Santa Cruz, but it is also available at every other University. It is not like the school's slogan is "smoke weed, be free." UCSC has plenty of environments such as the Library and substance free dorms to stay clear of drugs. If you want to smoke weed you can, but from what people have said, no one pressures you into drugs and students are very chill.

Also, you can smoke weed downtown San Diego as well, and cops will not arrest you. What good does it do to arrest someone for doing drugs? Once they get out, its back to smoking.

wow thank you very much more cowbell, i hope your not busy because i have more questions for you

1. how is the public transporation? is it easy to get around?
2. is there a lot of theft at merced? i plan on bringing a bunch of electronics that i rather keep for at least most of the way through college
3. also, would you recommend bringing a car? or would it be a unneeded expense
4. is there any difference between picking a major freshman year or junior year?

thanks again more cowbell

AZNguy:

1) Public transporation??? What is this?? Well, UC Merced has this thing called "cat tracks" its a bus that will take you from campus around town......SADLY IT SUCKS BEYOND BELIEF. For the love of God, I can not stress how much I hate the SLUGGISH, slow, impractical transportation here.

2) I almost never lock my door on campus...reason being I know everyone around me and feel safe that one of them arent going to try to pull a James' Bond and steal my Ipod.

3) Oh no my dear friend, a car is as usefull as your right leg here. If you dont have a car (even as a freshmen) you will hate life. It really is that simple. The campus is UBER-small, and you will get board of it within the first week.

4) None at all, except you get more perspective on what you really want to do. Go ahead and pick one freshmen year, and change it later if you want.

I think med school admissions depend more than anything on your MCAT scores and your academic record in college.
