A-G and 3.0 equals acceptance?

So is it true that the lower-tier UCs (particularly Merced and Riverside) automatically accept in-state students who've completed the A-G requirement with a 3.0 UC GPA?

What a coincidence! I just spoke with my counselor at UC Merced yesterday, and I asked her this same question.

Basically, she said no.

If you do meet A-G and you have a 3.0 then you must have extra curricular activities; sports(try and be a captain), clubs (try and be the VP or P), etc. Overall, just be a well-rounded student and have above a 3.0, and i believe you'll get in. UCM is pretty chill; if you like being secluded from parties and an amazing city like SF. Merced is dead; kids actually call it merdead. If you want to focus on school then come to UCM, but don't think that UCM doesn't have parties. ME and my suites mates have been here for 2 weekends and have thrown 2 parties with alcohol - although it is illegal according to UCM's handbook. They were fun and last night UCM threw a dance - to be honest it was a high school dance - there was even a raffle. Imagine that!

Tonight there was speed dating in the CA ROOM. haha it was fun(funny). ANd UCM gives out ice cream and free food all the time. The point is Merced is perfect for focusing on education, but you can still have as much of fun as you want if you hang out with the right ppl.

Thanks, but perhaps the counselor just said all that stuff so it doesn't make Merced look like a joke of a school to get into?

I wasn't really expecting all the other info because I don't plan on attending. I was just curious to see if the admissions for Merced is as non-holistic as people have been saying.

hahaha I appologize about the "other" info; it's just ppl make UCM seem so horrible when it's not. Ppl say it's horrible just because it doesn't have the prestige of UCLA, the beautiful campus as UCSB, and the amazing location as UCB.

That is the bottom line. However, just because you meet these requirements doesn't mean you'll get into UCM. If ppl who have better stats then you apply also then they'll get in before you. So the claim that:UCs (particularly Merced and Riverside) automatically accept in-state students who've completed the A-G requirement with a 3.0 UC GPA - is not true. It's all about competition along with the requirements being meet; generalizing, in this case, doesn't work.

Yep, that's totally understandable. Actually, I think people should stop writing off Riverside as such a horrible school since it's been climbing up the rankings lately (and they have the nicest website of the UCs, imo).

umm... i had a 2.8 and i got a D in Spanish 2 (never made that up) second semester and i still got in, i dont do sports either

I didnt meet the A-G requirements
I didnt meet the GPA requirements
And i got a 1540 on my SAT
and my Sat II scores were pretty bad too

I might have been lucky though

Maybe they're just really in need of undergrads? Are you planning on attending?

No we (UCM) aren't in need of undergrads because we have too many students already. there wasn't even enough room to provide everyone with a dorm - they weren't expecting so many undergrads attending this year. They are currently building some more new dorms so next year you all (freshman) will get them.

not really. The A-g and 3.0 are just minimums. However, UC Merced is accepting majority of its applicants.
