Personally, I wouldn't care either way. If I didn't go to Merced, I'd probably be at Riverside or a CC, which, currently, aren't any better than UCM anyway.
However, if UCM closed, the Central Valley wouldn't have any UC to represent it. Additionally, it takes time to develop a reputation and an organized system of research on any campus. You can't really fault UC Merced if it isn't exactly a powerhouse is research yet.
