I'd feel more comfortable with the manufacturer's site unless you're going with a major retailer (Circuit City, Best Buy, Costco, Fry's, etc.). I'm very wary of purchasing on the internet unless I have high confidence in the retailer. This is especially true if the deal looks a little bit "too" good.

Check out Lenovo's site. Also check out the deals through the bookstore on Lenovo, Dell, Sony, Apple, etc. There are other advantages to buying through the bookstore sometimes in the area of support and accessories.

Dell laptops are freaking amazing. I currently own a Dell Inspiron 9300, and it is great. I can assure you that i put it through a lot, considering its primary user is both a CS major and a gamer.

Oh yea, Dell support is surprisingly good. I broke a key off of the keyboard, so i sent them an email. I received a replacement keyboard within a couple days. Awesome.

I'd avoid macbooks for now, as it seems that many users are having loads of problems with these laptops.

Though Vaio's are expensive, they are very durable. I don't really think I need this good, but I won't have to worry about needing to buy a new one while still in college, which with a lot of Dells tends to be an issue. I have a BX, which comes with a biometric finger reader for security, which is pretty cool to play with.
But, my dad's best friends owns a computer store, so I got it for cost, making it the same price as a Dell off line.

I dunno about Vaios.. I've had bad experience with both their durability and Sony's Support. I guess it's just personal preference.. You get a dud and you tend to stay away from that company.

Anyways.. my MacbookPro is wonderful.. not experiencing any of the problems.. I here they have new logic boards? I love being able to run OS X and Windows simultaneously.. you can even copy/paste between them. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. They are so choice.
