i don't know why everyone thinks davis is swimming in cows. davis is my hometown (well, my most recent one, anyway) and i swear i've never seen more than 2 cows. and they were both for research purposes or something. but here's a little less well-known fact: ucd has a bunch of llamas!! how cool is that?!

you must have been in a very, very isolated pocket of davis if you've only seen 2 cows. compared to any other college in the state, davis IS swimming in them.

i was there interviewing last spring and snapped a few pictures while walking from the football field to the biology building -- voila, cows next to dorms. must be nice in the summer.

Good thing we're going to UC Socially Dead rather than the Stupid Drug Smuggling University to the south of us. Instead of just being hopelessly bored, we could have been hopelessly bored while in jail. Dozens of college students in drug bust - Crime & courts - MSNBC.com

cows are smelly, better suited for harris ranch than the middle of a university campus, and it seems cruel to keep llamas in the stifling heat that is the sacramento valley summer.

PS -- residents of the sacramento area take the "cowtown" label in stride, they don't actually deny it. for proof, check out video clips of fans swinging cowbells at kings games

Astrina, it seems like you're continually bashing a place that you've obviously never been to. Yes there are some cows (for research purposes, don't forget, UCD started as an agricultural university), but they're definitely not "everywhere" or "in the center" as you've described. I've been there many times and there's only a few on the outskirts of one part of the campus.

Secondly, you've yet to show one real reason as to how this affects UCD as a school at all. Honestly, I hope some of you decide to consider it! I can tell you firsthand that it really is a great town and school.

dumb conclusion, dmission.

i grew up in sacramento, both my parents are UC Davis alums, my mom worked at the vet school, i've been to over a dozen Picnic Days, visited friends, restaurants, and the farmer's market regularly. unless you live in davis proper, i daresay i've spent more time there then you have.

1. i didn't say there were cows everywhere. i said relative to any other university in the state, davis has lots more. the students accept that. ever heard of bossy cow cow?

2. cows are in the geographical center of campus. you may define the more important areas of campus differently, but in the circle that is UCD property, the dairy is pretty damn close to the middle. UC Davis: Visiting: Campus Map

3. the cows might suck if you live in tercero or are a biology grad student (labs on either side of dairy), but it doesn't affect the majority of campus. i never said davis was a bad school. the cows are something the school (and the entire metropolitan area) laugh at. i applied to UCD for both undergrad and grad school, i can't hate the place if i did that, right?

I agree w/Astrina. We were there w/our son last summer for a campus tour and even the tour guide, a current student mind you, was joking about the cows and smells! He specifically stated to stay away from Tercero as when the wind picks up it blows the nasty smells right into the dorms! Yuck!! Thnik I would much rather smell the ocean breeze!

I have a friend who did undergrad there and said ucd animal science lab generates the most top notch meat! haha..

I thought UCD was a school with AGRICULTURAL and BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES roots and I'm pretty sure they lead the world in these areas.. I'm surprised that you guys seem all surprised with the pastoral culture there. I mean basically the Sacramento area is essentially flat plains and sunshine, perfect for agriculture and environmental studies and research for biological engineering (or whatever they do).

The United States is so successful today basically because of technological breakthroughs in agriculture and farming.
