I got into the revelle college for biochem major at UCSD. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for choosing professors for any GE courses. I'm hoping I can find some good professors, in terms of easiness, before the orientation day, or whenever I get to sign up for classes. The GEs themselves at revelle are enough nightmares already, and if I get hard professors on top of that... mite as well drop dead. lol so yeah, appreciate any kind of suggestions. Thanks

Hoeger is good for chem (has online podcasts too)
Johnson (girl) is the easiet, hence her class fills super fast..i wish i could have had her
if Pomeroy teaches again, id advise against it, hes a good lecturer, but mostly teaches upper div, and had a horrible curve (4% a, 5%b, like 55%c, rest d's and f's) and doesnt give + or -

so out of those id go Johnson, Hoeger, Crowell, Pomeroy

ive heard Dipasquali (sp?) is okish..but, not better than Hoeger, so id put him somehwere below Crowell probably
Crowell is pretty ok..has a bit of a studder tho..and had hard tests, even tho he hands out slides

if the only class you can sing up for is Emre Mengi, dont(!) sign up. he is possibally the worst calc teacher at ucsd..waitlist some other prof, or just dont take calc that quarter, its really not worth it...

Ping-Shun Chan doesnt really pull his weight, hes really funny in the beginning, but doesnt really teach well, and no notes or anything on tests (which ive never had a prof who would let you have them anyways, but i kno others do)

Ive heard Eggars is pretty awesome, anyone who took his class didnt have too hard/painful of a time

Gatzouraz is really old, and just walks up to the board and writes stuff from the book, so hes not too difficult, and pretty straight forward if you keep on your stuff

and...i see that Glenn Tesler teaches 20c, i had him for a lecture for BioInf... i didnt kno he taught math, but he was a wonderful lecuturer and hes super smart (makes computer algorithms to show the evolution process between like mice and humans) pretty interesting lecture, but im not sure how well of a math teacher he is..

so out of these guys id go

Eggars, Gatz/Tesler, Chan, and never again Mengi

for bio Santoso is amazing (no final, just four midterms), and heather henter i heard is kind of clueless and unsure of herself

and for hum (youll start winter) Cox is amazing, hes like head of humanities dept, know his stuff, and is funny too..Chodorow is also good, and has a study guide for the final, so alot of people like to take him..i heard Smarr (lady) is ok, kind of boring but really into humanities...i cant remember any other hum profs right now tho...

so hum cox, chodorow, smarr


and if anyone takes japanese (lol)
kameda is kinda frantic, even tho she wants everyone to do well..she insists people go to her office if they miss class, and emails you if you miss
Ito is very nice, talks fast tho, but hands out papers with the grammer on them everyday..she does everything on power point tho, so if youre more of a visual do it yourself learner, id take kameda

Prof choice shouldn't matter if you aren't pre-health.

are you kidding me??

your class is determined by the level of your teachers..if you want a good class you should get a good prof..sure you have to do your own work..but profs are a major factor in your education, or we'd all just do independent study and not even be in college

i'd make the argument (and many would agree with me) that all of the phys1 professors suck and you're going to be learning on your own. i had 3/3 bad ones.

although i have been told anderson was the best out of the professors. but that's not saying much since it's not hard to be the best of the worst.

ochem A. i heard perrin was good and whitesell for the easy A (but you might get owned in ochem B & C). yang also taught...he was in the middle of those 2. but really boring. o'connor was a decent professor too, he was pretty into teaching and he held extra review sessions every week for 2 hours. ternansky is supposed to be one of the best, but hardest professors. i've heard people coming out of his class that he changed their lives and made them love ochem. O_O

i love how the thread is all math/science/hum classes. :P take your GEs P/NP if you can...so easy if you do.

Recommended profs

Chem 6A - Johnson (I had Pomeroy; he isn't as bad as most people describe him; he's funny)
Chem 6B - KUMMEL KUMMEL KUMMEL KUMMEL; 'nuff said
Chem 6C - Hoeger, Dipasquale, ? (I have Trogler; he's genuinely into chem and probably the most intelligent prof. i've met so far, but he's incredibly boring)

Hum 1 - Edwards; most of his lectures are based on rape, plus he can whip out a humorous comment here and there
Hum 2 - Caciola; (I have Smarr; she's boring but doesn't slack off)

Math 20 Series - Eggers, Rogalski

as a chem grad, I'll second Dk-blue_Falcon's professor recommendations. just two things to add:

1. Tina Johnson is a good professor for any class in the series, period. She also teaches 6C occasionally.
2. If you can't score Kummel for 6B, go with Crowell. I never took any notes in his class, but all his exam questions have been repeated for so long that his practice exams are the exact same thing as the real ones. My TA used his old exams to prep us during discussion section, it helped immensely

I'm not sure whether to fulfill HUM 1/2 at CC or NOT.
