Why ask for chances?

It seems like those of you posting to ask your chances of admission are high achievers who already know that you meet the standards for UCSD. It is a point system, the details of the formula are readily available on the website. If you need reassurance, you can plug your stats into the formula and have a much more accurate measure of your chances than any of us can tell you. By the way, as a first quarter freshman, I encourage you to apply. It's great, hard work but great. The people are the nicest you would ever want to meet.

WOW, amen to this!

I have NEVER understood why people on CC ask for their chances. We have no idea, we are not admissions counselors. Why would you trust our judgement?
I never respond to them haha

Geez, do you guys really need to be so mean to prospective students? They're just high schoolers who have argueably the most dramatic and intense wait of their lives. Cut them some slack.

darkdude, I did not intend to be mean. I don't think that they are doing themselves a favor by spending their energies on this and then investing emotions in random stranger's subjective validation of their hopes when there is an actual source of objective and credible information at their fingertips.

I have to agree with comp sci.

The only reason I respond is so i dont see the thread starter just keep bumping it.

Looking back to the time when i posted up a chances thread... I cant believe i did that.

In the time that I spent posting up, and then repeatedly checking over and over and over and over again... i could have been working on my essays or applications to strengthen them.

I must say I find it discouraging of the students that post such threads. I feel that confidence and self-esteem should be something that is import in college if you want to be successful (in academics, social life, profession), and it always bothers me to see such threads about "chancing". I can understand that for some it's just to gain that extra reassurance about getting in, but it still bothers me as it not only displays the whole confidence and self-esteem issue, but also how needy they are.
I discovered CC from my roommate last year, and since then I've been reading the posts and posting whenever I feel I can contribute something of worth (help, insight, etc.) and I looked up my roommate's previous posts. My roommate's threads of "Chance ME!", followed by "bump"'s and "can you edit my UC essays", completely turned me off. I know this is a discussion board for college, but perhaps we can try to be a bit more independent?

This also applies to questions to which answers can easily be googled.

@Radiance best site EVAR.

if any prefrosh care to read this (not that it'll stop more of them from asking for chances): it's nice to get reassurances that you're smart and awesome enough to get into college. but you have to remember that the type of people who "staff" these forums, cool as we are, don't know that much more than you. our chance-predicting capabilities are only as extensive as those we meet -- and UCSD students (like any other school) run through the whole extent of the spectrum.

i'll admit that i'm old enough to NOT have used CC when i was applying, but out of curiosity last year i made up an alias and submitted my high school stats. some told me i was a reach, some told me i wouldn't get in, and it's all good -- my status as an two-time alum isn't questioned, but that pretty much convinced me that admission predictions are best left up to those who are paid to do it.
