I'm not sure what papers you would be mailing, but if there's nothing to identify you by (and they can't even look at the return address on your envelope), then I'd think that you might just have to do it over again.

"Academic Advising" is just when someone tells you about the requirements you'll have to fulfill in order to get your degree. It's not really all that personalized at orientation, though your orientation guide can probably answer any questions you'd have about classes.
At orientation, you're given a bag with the
UCSB catalog,
LASAR (a small book that lists GE requirements for students in the College of Letters and Sciences - I've linked to the one applicable for my year, but yours will be different),
Kiosk, and some other things. Your orientation guide will show you how to schedule classes on
GOLD as well as things to look out for when you sign up for classes (making sure times for classes and finals don't conflict, etc.).
If you were to just "show up and leave," orientation wouldn't be worth what you pay for it. I suppose you could schedule classes without ever going to orientation, but I don't know how you'd make sure you weren't missing anything important (like getting your Access Card, for example).
