Car Dilemma...any advice?

I am really 50/50...

I have been informed that I recieved the parking permit for Santa Catalina just 2 days ago, but my parents have been recently pushing me to go without it this year. I don't really have a problem with it considering the fact that 80% of the school pop. all get around by bike. My twin sister is also commuting from her school (carpooling) and she needs a car as soon as she obtains her license...

.......but I've also heard the other end, that its good/useful to have to go around the city, outside of school campus and its not like I live far away from home either to visit (Los Angeles 1.5-2 hours south) Plus, what if there's any emergencies? Or how do I visit home? (Don't really know anyone else there) Doesn't that also mean I need to lug way more things to my dorm than I had originally planned?

Should I decline my permit? Or keep it? (Take or have a bike also eventually)

You can take the AMTRAK back to LA, if you don't have a car in SB.

in my opinion it's not necessary to have a car, but it's pretty damn convenient.

i lived in santa catalina last year, and it is completely possible to do everything without a car. most likely you'll either bike/walk/take the bus to campus daily. also, the bus runs right up to camino real market place, so you really don't need a car to get to a grocery store or the movie theater or some local restaurants. the bus also goes downtown, so that takes care of going there. to get to la, you can always take the train or the greyhound which leave from downtown sb. (plus, you don't know anyone now, but trust me, by the end of the first few weeks, you'll have tons of friends ) if an emergency does arise, you can almost guarantee you will know somebody with a car to help you out. and the only thing i can think of that you may need to take more of with you is clothes, since you won't be able to go back and forth to home as often.

like i said, it's obviously way easier to have a car, but if for some reason you can't/decide you don't want to bring it, you can still do everything.

thank you guys for your replies~

How long is the time from amtrak/greyhound to LA and also, should I or not bring my car lol...

DO you think the permit cost is worth it? Beneficial/or not for my situation...

it's about 2 hours and 45 minutes on amtrak and about 3 hours on the greyhound.

i think you shouldn't bring your car. it seems best for you to just leave it for your sister when she may need it more, just because everything will be so local for you. and if it turns out you hate not having a car, at least you'll know and can bring it later instead of being out the permit money and it turning out you didn't need it. if that makes sense haha.
