Hi,

I was going to be a transfer/exchange student from Vancouver, Canada, and I was wondering how off-campus housing students find their places, and roughly when (If I was planning to attend in the fall term).

I've searched on Craigslist, but it seems fairly uncommon that people are looking to house with other people.

What exactly I was looking for was a couple of students renting a place out together. Is this common in UCSC?

Yes, renting a house with other students is extremely common at UCSC. Because you are a transfer (and from another country!), it is probably beneficial for you to get housing on campus since the campus is so isolated. I know people who lived off campus the first quarter as a transfer who applied for housing in the dorms because they were so lonely and had no friends. I can't imagine what it would be like to be an international student coming all the way from another country (and probably not knowing anyone and in a new culture, etc)... But if you really want to save money just look on Craigslist. People usually want to meet with you in person, though (how will they know if they like you or not if they don't?).

Use this website and craigslist to help with your search, but my recommendation would be be to spend the first year on-campus. Not only is this hugely beneficial to help you get used to living away from home, you might find a few people who'll want to be roommates the year after, so all you have to do is find housing.
