chance at UCSC

Hey everyone, This is my first post on CC, but I have been lurking for more than a year now. With my junior year complete, I thought it would be the right time to finally narrow down to a few schools I should apply to.

I am looking at pretty much all of the University of California system, as well as, a few private schools which include Universtiy of the Pacific, as well as, St. Mary's College.

My Stats:

Iranian Male
Weighted GPA 10-11 Grade: 3.67
Rank: Top 30%
SAT I: 1820
SAT IIs: Bio M: 570 and US history 540. <--- Very very low
ACT: Not Taken Yet

I plan on retaking the SAT I and ACT in the fall, and yes, I realize my GPA is extremely low.

EC's + Awards + Leadership:

secretary treasurer for the tock Market Analysis Club - 3 years
Volleyball - 3 years
Model UN Captain
Youth Action Council Volunteer
Summer Bio Technology Camp

NCS Scholar Athlete Award
Volleyball Coach's Award
Academic Achievement Award

I hold the title of "Manager" as the store I work at
1 year of leadeship at my high school
Most Improved Student (Freshman year)

I have taken three college courses at my local community college

My summer project includes starting up a Charity with Micro-financing by incorporating the school's Stock Market cub.
I am also going to be a basketball coach for 7th and 8th graders this fall through the city I live in.

There are some more random Ec's here and there, but I understand I fail to have anything that would wow an admissions officer.

I would apply for the biomolecular engineering program at UCSC, thank you for your honest opinion.

You're fine, especially if you bring those scores up.

If I can raise my SAT I score by maybe 50-100 points and bring my SAT II scores up by 100 each, should I consider myself pretty much safe for UCSC? I am worried about my 3.67 GPA being too low....

I had around 3.7W with 2100 SATI and 700/740 SATIIs and I got a merit scholarship so if you bring up the SAT (and with them putting less emphasis on subject tests), I'd say you're good for at least admission. A friend of mine friend with lower GPA and scores got in too.

I got in with a 3.4 gpa. haha

You'll be fine!

Although my SATs were pretty high, but your gpa should even things out. Don't worry.

My Goal is to score above 1900 on the SAT. So UCSC doesnt put a real emphasis on the SAT IIs? Do you know how competative it is to get into the Bioengineering program? I am hoping to visit the campus in a couple weeks, I have heard nothing but great thinkgs about UCSC.

Bio anything are probably some of the hardest majors to get into, unfortunately. But I think you'd still be ok. Maybe try bringing up that Bio SATII, even if they don't weight the IIs as heavily (which I'm not even sure about), a high score will help if your major is competitive.

ooh btw thanks for chancing me . I'm still debating between taking AP physics or regular (no Honors). My sister went to UCSC and graduated 08 lol. She prob got around ur GPA but a lil lower SAT I score and higher SAT II score (USH *650-700* Lit *forgot but low 600 i think*) I would recommend doing Math II though if ur planning on doing biomolecular engineering
