UCSC 2010 Admission

Is it still possible to get into UCSC with a gpa below 3.0?

I have a friend with a 2.8 GPA avg going into his senior year. If he gets a 3.8-4.0 his first semester of senior year do you think he has a chance to get in? His SAT is about 1500, but he has a lot of extra curricular activities like sports, clubs, job experience, and a lot of other things.

Does the UC system have some sort of special acceptance for people with circumstances like that?

It's pretty unlikely. I do know that there are a few every year who get in with below a 3.0, but honestly, they have to have either learning disabilities or have seriously improved.

Here's the statistics for UCSC admissions:

University of California - Admissions

If you click the PDF Admission Rates Chart, you can see that 174 students were accepted with a GPA below 3.0

Doubt it, unless he has a good reason for why his GPA is so low (Death in the family, learning disability, etc).

Even if he gets a 4.0 GPA first semester, it won't be enough time to put on the application. I'm afraid he has an extremely low percentage of being accepted unless something serve happened.
