| Winter Transfer Student Housing: Apartment unlikely?
Being a winter transfer student, how have my chances of being placed in an apartment changed? I plan on making Stevenson, College 10, and Cowell my top three choices. I know that transfers are given priority when it comes to apartments, but since most of those spaces have probably filled in the fall, should I expect to be placed in a dorm?

I asked something similar and heard:
"This years campus housing was very underfilled. I have a friend who is in an apartment for 5 that only has two in it. The were practically begging students to sign up for campus housing at the end of last year. so I think you should be fine"

For what it's worth, this is a snip of the reply I was given when I asked about college affiliation versus getting the type of housing one preferred (I want a single and I am more than happy to pay the extra money to set my mind at ease I will have my own space to go to that I will not have to share). Quote:
In general, college affiliation does not factor in heavily when housing assignment are made. In general, we suggest that you indicate your academic college preferences based on the college that initially appeals to you as a center for advising and living.
Once you have a college affiliation, you will apply for housing online at UC Santa Cruz - Student Login. Please note that you won't have access until after your college affiliation has been processed. Student Housing Online has a questionnaire asking students to indicate what type of housing they would prefer, as well as types of housing they'd be willing to accept if the first preference is not available. College housing coordinators work with students to discuss their options. You will learn more about this as Winter Orientation.

I am a little concerned about the "at Winter Orientation" bit since that seems cutting it rather close. But c'est la vie, c'est la guerre.

Thanks for the additional info. I'm still undecided if I want to live in an apartment with transfers or in a dorm on a transfer-student floor. Winter Orientation? Yeah, that's cutting it close.

I know this is a silly reason but I'd rather live in a residence hall because the bathrooms are restocked/cleaned by staff everyday lol!

That is a silly reason because you also share a bathroom with 20 + people. Last year I shared one with 50 other people. Even after Gorge cleaned, it was a disgusting germ bath. This year I live in an on campus apartment and our bathroom is WAY more cleaner than it ever was last year.

I've had the opposite experience with a shared apartment, I need to try something else. So I guess I'm going to learn the hard way at UCSC lol |

Oh okay. Good luck with that! I can't imagine living with less people being worse, but apparently you know. May I ask what happened that made it so bad? Just so I know what the signs are hahah

Oh my.. firstly, there was NEVER any toilet paper. It got to the point that I had to hide rolls in my room. Everything that was mine in the shower got used much faster than I was going through them (i.e. I was always running out of shampoo, conditioner, body wash). There was a ring in the toilet that no matter how hard I scrubbed reappeared in a matter of days. Living on the beach our shower was coated in dark green growths that I had to scrub with hot water and chlorine-based spray (not fun). I liked to keep a roll of paper towels in there and I swear to god that would disappear in less than a week each time. The floor was constantly covered with dirt, sand and hair. The towel rack was broken by a drunk person. The cupboard was ripped off the hinges, repaired with only one screw. Someone peeled a piece of linoleum off the floor. Lots of soap scum. Dirty walls. Clogged drains.
Hope you have better luck than me lmao!!!!!

Oh my god.
That is disgusting. I don't blame you. I've started writing really mean notes all over the kitchen because people don't wash their dishes or clean up a mess or put the Brita back in the fridge, let alone refill it. Living with people is really hard! I'm sorry you had to go through that. You will definitely find the dorms much more pleasant because their bathrooms are cleaned 5 days a week. Luckily, I only share my bathroom with 2 other girls, and they're my friends so if they make a mess, I don't feel weird saying something.
Did you live in an apartment with strangers?

I don't blame you. I definitely wish sometimes that I could kick people out of on campus housing. One of my housemates has couchsurfers stay with us for almost a week at a time without asking us, so I get the whole unwelcome visitors/squatters thing.

Jeez, that sucks. That's exactly why I'm trying to find a place where it'll be just me and my dog, haha. |
