S watched the smoke billow from Tower 4

in the middle of the night. All I know is that I woke up to the news this morning where they were interviewing students in front of the Towers about the fire. Of course, not hearing which Tower it was I was grumbling as to why S had not called just to alleviate fear when the news hit the airways. DH called S about 6:45, and S mumbled, "it was the tower next to me, I'm safe, going back to sleep, see you at breakfast later."

Apparently, from what we've heard: girl ... candle. Geesh!

Wow!

Thanks for the info. DS spent the night with relatives, so he missed it.

Yep, it was on the 3rd floor. My daughter is on the 4th floor. She was at a friend's apartment when it occurred. Ended up spending the night there after one of her roommates called her to tell her what happened. I would hate to be "Candle Girl" right now. I bet that apartment and the one's next to it are a huge mess ( I heard that the sprinklers went off in the neighboring apartments, too).

Isn't tower 4 in the same building as tower 3; just opposite wings? That's my understanding.

No, they are different buildings.

There are 4 Towers. Each is a separate building.
UCF Campus Map
The Towers are the 4 "U" shaped buildings on the north (and slightly east) side of campus.

My daughter's best friend was in her apt on the fifth floor. She said it was a little smokey in the hallway but not really any big deal. She was allowed back into her apt. about 2 AM.

Middle of the night? Sheesh! I think I was over there around 11 and there wasn't any smoke pouring out of anywhere even at that point.

Each of the towers are a seperate building. Tower 4 is next to Tower 3, they are both near Gemini and N. Orion. The other towers, 1 and 2, are at Gemini and one of the Plaza Drives. The Arena is in between them, the stadium is behind 3 and 4.

It seems absurd to me how long all of the students had to wait before being allowed back in. Even in my own apartment in Lake Claire, someone pulled the alarm as a prank at 3:30 one morning. It was in the 40's outside and we had to stand around for over an hour. The alarm went off for about 30 minutes before anyone showed up to turn it off (we told them it wasnt' a fire, so I guess they figured we could just listen to the sound for a while...).

And just last month, a washer caught on fire in the Lake Claire laundry room. I don't understand how a water filled device caught on fire, but hey, it did. Fire crews responded very quickly to that too--they seem to get here fast when there actually is a fire.

JaJa, I don't know of the exact time. I just know my s's room faces the room of the girl with the candle. He watched firefighters break out the window with an axe so that the smoke could be ventilated.

It's too bad about the false alarms. Makes people complacent and that's dangerous.
