Favorites Essay

How many categories are you guys doing?

Do you think it would suffice to do only two categories in which I discuss two things in one category and only one thing in another?

I plan on doing two books and one song.

What are you guys doing?

I wrote about my favorite movie, author and painting. As long as you can go somewhat in detail (it's inevitable that you'll have to leave many things out, these being your favorite things) about why they mean so much to you or/and why you find them to be masterpieces then the essay will be great. I mean, it's probably better to go into detail about a few things than have laundry list that anybody can come up with by Googling lists of best movies, books, paintings, etc.

Alright, thanks for the advice.

Would you suggest me to try to do one additional category instead of doing two books?

No. Looking back at my essay, I actually would have left out one of the categories because I really wanted to say more about one of the others. Again, I think you're essay will come off as more authentic and better written if you focus on only a few things that you truly love instead of just listing many with little explanation. If you feel more strongly about those two books than something in another category then write about those books. This is all based on my opinion, I have no real idea what the adcom would prefer.

The Why UChicago essay (which is required) and Favorites essay (which is optional) show up on the supplement every year. Though they were not included in the sneak peak (which was just for the uncommon essay AKA the famous UChicago prompts), they will still be seen when this year's supplement is released and could be responded to now.

I have no idea what I will do for the Favorites essay, though I have already written about my "archnemesis" and am presently working on my Why UChicago piece.
