ANYONE who knew the minute he saw that nice, fat envelope that he would be spending the next four years at UChicago--- anyone who threw out all his other apps this past weekend because UC is the most kick ass place EVER--- introduce yourself!!!!!
I'm Amalia from NY
interested in law, history, english...
i work but it doesnt overwhelm my life... so i plan on having a nice fun slash intellectually stimulating college experience
are people filling out the housing forms yet? where are you requesting to live? Palevsky for me is number 1 but i really dont know where else to put down! help!
Fadi from Illinois (25 miles from Chi-town). Your name is cool, Amalia. Rolls off the tongue.
Interested in law, math, and bioengineering.
I'm big in community service, and I hope to do that at U of C.
For the housing forms, I'm actually going to start filling them out today. I don't know for sure where I want to live, all the places sound really cool, but I narrowed it down to a few dorms. My mom likes Pavlesky because of the privacy and private bathroom (but I'll have to clean it! How am I to manage that? Cleaning? Bathroom?). So Pavlesky seems to be up there. Maybe I'll see you on my floor, lola
Hey, I'm Sarah from NYC and I'm interested in Art History and Fundamentals. My first choice was Snell-Hitchock because I love it's old, gothic-y feel and central location, plus I stayed there with a friend and it seemed like a really fun, supportive group of folk (who balance work and play quite well). I'm hoping for a single room, and they're in limited supply, which is why I filled in the form so quickly. I'll admit it, I'm a bit of a workaholic, but I also like to have fun too. I'm looking forward to winters, the core, and meeting y'all! Oh yeah, and meeting J.M. Coetzee : )
I'm betsy from indianapolis, i'm into econ, philosophy, and french. i thought about palevsky but the outside is so.... out there, so im not sure. im mostly concerned about not having to share a bathroom with the whole world and having a decent sized double. anybody know what chicago housing fits that description?
i think pavlevsky might be the place for that, although it is really pretty ugly, haha, i agree. Reminded me of soviet architecture. I've heard that Shoreland and BJ have really nice sized rooms, many of which have single bathrooms. Check out http://www.rh.uchicago.edu/hds/housing/halls/ if you haven't already. It has some more photos and gives some more info on what you got in the acceptance package.
Hey, I'm jere from small-town Southern Minnesota. i am interested in physics and law, and was ecstatic that despite the fact that i'm not going to reply to their offer until late April, that EA acceptances still get priority in the housing game! (please tell me this is true.) I visited briefly on my way through. I will definitely be going to the Campus Preview thing. I toured pavlesky, and thought the dorms themslevles were awesome! (private b-room). Anyone have any thoughts on the other dorms? What else do Pavlesky have to offer? I was so excited Friday. My counselor was going crazy cuz this is the most prestigous school she has gotten anyone into in oh, about, FOREVER! (lousy school)
Erin Guinn from El Paso, Texas and I'm interested in Ancient Studies and Classical Civ. When I stayed at Max, I really didn't like the dorm. It didn't really reflect UofC for me and the atmosphere I was going for. Thats why I am applying for a single (and they have many) at B-J courts. It's so beautiful there and the houses seem to be really close. Also, a downer is communal bathrooms.
Max is awesome if you're going for the whole close knit roomy thing. But if you have bad roomies, then its awful. There are four roomates living in a suite and there is a connecting hallway. Two to each room and a seperate shower and bathroom (you have to share with three other people)
Broadview is my second choice but its too secluded. I liked it because you get to have your own bathroom per person.
Yes, I am fixated on the bathrooms. I'm a hygiene freak.
I have done quite a bit of research on most of the dorms. Snell is beautiful on the outside, but fungus filled on the inside. Also, there's rampant rodents in the winter. This was really dissapointing because I really loved this dorm. You can prove me wrong. I have only lived in Max and been to snell and BJ one time.
Nice! Thanks, Fadi (male or female?) for that link, it really is hilarious. Erin, a)thanks for the shout out on the stats page! b) i'm a hygeine freak too! actually your tastes and hopes for housing sound just like mine. i once heard a girl say she wanted a room mate because she never had a sibling, but i always wonder--don't you want a sibling you know!? anyway, the attraction of snell, aside from it's location and structure, is the community, which is a bit warmer than that of BJ's, according to some u of c friends/alums who lived there and in other houses. I also, personally, didn't like the idea of crossing the midway at night alone. but i must admit the wood burning fireplaces were attractive...
I'm otto from Golden Valley, MN (suburb attatched to minneapolis)
I'm interested in physics and other sciences and I really just want to learn everything (registering for classes is going to suck)
Palevsky is attractive but I want to find out more about the others first (and cleaning bathrooms only sucks if it it isnt done often...I had to clean the mens room at work for the first time in a few months...oh man...never again)
How do you find out all these details about the dorms? We only saw part of one in B-J. The common room and bathroom were very plain and a little depressing, worse that her high school's. We heard Shoreland was best (from Shoreland ppl, natch) but it doesn't seem great to live off campus as a freshman and gettting used to the weather.
Ah! So BJ residents aren't friendly?
I heard the same about Snell-not being friendly. I don't exactly remember who told me but one person left (she was from tx) because they were so hostile to her and her uplifting attitude. She may just be paranoid. Eventually she had to move to BJ. I was reeeallly considering Snell until I read someones journal that lived there. Oh well, I'll do some more research.
About crossing the Midway, I'll just have some pepper spray and a zapper.
Yes, on the other thread, I was thrilled to hear that BJ had some private bathrooms..*phew*
