The irony is that you yourself are participating in this conversation. If you think what I said was immature, then you could consider your statements immature as well.
Actually, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that one of my duties here is to keep the forums from spiraling into disorder. You are a threat to order, and so I have to tell you to either cut it out or leave the Chicago forum. The intent of this forum is to serve as a way to exchange opinions on educational and college movements and to allow prospective students a chance to ask questions and receive quality answers. Bickering among forum members on threads (this doesn't apply to private messaging) is unhelpful, and creating threads aimed at questioning another member of the forum is in no way appropriate.

If you look at the first page, Beefs was the first one to call me "immature" after asking a simple question. Who do you think started this "bickering"? As such, if you were truly trying to keep order, you should've called on Beefs to stop at his first ad hominem attack and not contributed to it yourself. Being biased towards one side is not the proper way to keep order. Also, by your logic, my starting this thread was also an attempt to keep order; I was trying to figure out, peacefully, the causes of Beefs's undue bias against NU, so that future petty arguments could be prevented.
However, the truth is...neither of us is a moderator. What right do you think to have this power?

Children, children, children!

Please.

Now, I think it would be a good time to bring out the Snap Cup!

I'll start.

Well, cory123, although I'm probably not a member of this 'team' you speak of, whenever a prospective student needs to know which schools are the top in a particular area, giving them information is not a particularly horrendous deed. Especially as Chicago is constantly overlooked on prestige-based CC.
ye I understand where you're coming from. It just annoys me when I see people treat Uchicago as this poor university which needs to be saved by incoming freshman who find the need to constantly boast to compensate for its so-called "underrated" reputation. It doesn't need saving. Either that, or I get the feeling incoming freshman, especially, find the need to feel adaquete in comparison to kids who got into similarly ranked schools that have more prestige..schools like Columbia or Duke or Upenn. I guess that's a natural feeling to have, but I say we should just be proud of Uchicago and forget about proving ourselves to people who neglect or underrate it.

The majority of Chicago kids(or kids at any school) really don't care too much about their luck of the draw in college admissions. They come to whine and pout on CC and they either grow up, get over it, or live in their own world of simulated misery.

Most Chicago kids were turned down from some amazing schools and accepted into other amazing schools. The schools are all amazing and the students who were selected to go there are all amazing.

sanjen....please shut up...you did this to me and now you're doing it to beefs (for different reasons). Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Stop stalking people on CC and live your own life.

And this isn't just a Chicago thing, either. I know plenty of people at HPM who were rejected from other top-tier schools and some lesser-ranked schools. Even Fulbright scholars. And from my experience here thus far, I've seen that the people who denied HYPMS to come here are in no way better than the people who were rejected at HYPMS. In fact, of the people I know, the latter group is probably a more qualified student body than the former, although I'm sure if I knew a wider range of students, it would come out to be about even.

How did I do what to you, Sheed? I questioned why you cited Focus on the Family as scientific evidence for your stance against homosexuality. I was just curious... is that wrong? I also mentioned that UChicago has a statement that discourages heterosexism and anti-homosexuality, and that your anti-homosexual stance is a threat to this statement. Why is that wrong to point out?

There's no doubt Chicago students are bright. I have no problem with UChicago students in general... just those like Beefs who pick on Northwestern in particular. It's totally fine to have personal preferences when it comes to the school you want to attend (I myself would go to many others before I even consider UChicago), but this doesn't mean picking on one particular school (bashing it implicitly or explicitly) is respectful.

Sanjen, the only reason I contributed to this thread was to highlight that Chicago/Northwestern/amazingschools don't suffer (or maybe all suffer?) a "We're not Harvard" complex.

Otherwise, I'd rather sit the bickering out and only chime in when I feel it's necessary to dispel a generalization about the U of C. I'm here for advice and questions, dogfights are what "The Real World" is far.

But honestly? This is a world of quasi-anonymity and message boards. Based on what I've seen, this message board tends to be saner than most, but flare-ups are bound to happen.

I suggest that you reread my posts, because I'm very supportive of dissenting opinions (my friend at UChicago, for instance, says Chicago is full of "annoying people" and he's able to substantiate that). Everyone is definitely entitled to dislike certain schools. I was just asking WHY Beefs was biased against Northwestern in particular (he likes picking on it for some reason). My problem is not that he doesn't like Northwestern but that he's not public about his reasons why (I do hope he at least knows why he's biased against it). It's like saying "I hate Bush. I don't know why though, or if I do, I'm not telling you."

Actually, more than anything, from your comments it seems like you constantly want to bash Chicago. Also, who cares if beefs has good reasons for disliking Northwestern (if he even does)? Lots of people dislike universities for inexplicable and/or irrational reasons.

For example, I think Yale is full of idiots, and I think 3/4s of MIT's student body is full of obnoxious fakes. Both judgments are based on anecdotal evidence. I obviously can't make statements concerning the entire student body, seeing as how I have nothing but anecdotal evidence by which to judge.

Oh, I have nothing but praise for Chicago. What comments are you talking about? If you look at my history, I've recommended the University to people on this website who seem like it would be a great fit for them (cory is one). It also used to be my favorite college until sophomore year of high school. The applications from the school I was attending at the time skyrocketed in part because I talked convincingly about the school (people who found out about the greatness of school through me first). Years later, I simply realized schools like NU, Harvard, WashU, Brown, Yale, Stanford, Rice, and Emory were actually the type(s) of schools I liked instead. Once again, if you reread my posts, I'm not bashing UChicago but Beefs' mentality.

Well, it speaks of Beefs if he has no good reasons for disliking something. That's fine too.
