Coffee Shops and Open Mics

are there any places (coffee shops maybe) at UChicago where they play music and you can just hang out/talk with people? also, are there any open mic events?

Yes, yes, and yes, yes, yes.

Mostly Hallowed Grounds, second floor of the Reynolds Club, and Cobb Coffee shop, which holds concerts from time to time.

I hope U of Chicago is a jazz-hip hop (freestyle/ poetry) based atmosphere when it comes to music...and especially when it comes to open mics.

I know some people who do some really neat jazz/hip-hop/spoken word. My Open Mic attendance is not as high as it should be, so I can't say for sure, but check out the club that organizes them, FOTA:
