@infinityiseight: I guess the adcoms don't like Obama-campaigning, EIC, animal shelter volunteers like us huh? Strange. Looks like I'm in good company with my fellow rejectees, though, which is comforting.

I'm so thankful I was largely ignorant of just how selective some schools are (not to mention the CC crazies) before applying. I would have been scared off...

After over a year of reading these decision threads, it's almost surreal to be submitting my first one.

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:
  • SAT I (by section): 710CR/770M/710W [8E]
  • SAT IIs: 750 Math II, 740 Lit, 730 Physics
  • ACT: 34
  • APs: APUSH [4] (self-studied--our school doesn't offer APs until senior year). Taking Calc BC, Physics C Mechanics, English Lit, Stats, and Art Portfolio/Studio this year.
  • IBs: -
  • GPA: 4.0
  • Rank: 8/544
  • Other stats: National Merit Finalist, smatterings of other local and state awards, MUNUC Outstanding Delegation
Subjective:
  • ECs listed on app: President/Chief Editor--Environmental Club, Model UN, Literary Magazine, co-founded GSA in a relatively conservative school, a few other social activist activities, Columbia High School Summer Program, violin tour group (playing for ten years now)
  • Job/Work Experience: None, really, other than babysitting
  • Essays (subject and responses): I did the quote prompt in two parts by tweaking the order of the words and answering the subsequent sentences. It was a lot of fun to write, and my Common app essay was written on a blog a while ago during a hard time. It's all uplifting-like. I really loved it. My favorite things essay was basically a list of all my more eccentric happinesses. And for Why UChicago? I wrote about their bathroom graffiti on my first ever college visit.
  • Teacher Recs: My physics teacher talked about my love for learning and my anthropology teacher talked about my social activism in and out of school. The former was a little less enthusiastic as the latter, but it was still good.
  • Counselor Rec: She knows a lot about who I am and what I've gone through, and has done a lot for me these past two years. It was definitely good.
  • Interview: AMAZING. My UChicago interview was the best. We met at a really wonderful coffeeshop and talked for over two hours. It also helped that my interviewer looked and acted liked one of my best friends who goes to U of C right now.
  • Applied on: RD
  • Hook (if any): Maybe the social activism and the extensive instrumental-ness. I'm fairly well-rounded but enjoy being rather quirky ... all the time. I'm also very enamored with languages, though I didn't really mention that in my application. I speak two languages fluently and am working on two others.
Location/Person:
  • State or Country: IL
  • School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Public, usually don't send that many to UChicago, never sent any to Ivies. A valedictorian got into Stanford two or three years ago, but it's really not a remarkable place. Better one in the area, though. Most people end up at a state school.
  • Ethnicity: Chinoise
  • Sex: Female
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: After being deferred from one school and waitlisted at another, getting accepted one of my top three is a huge relief. I love the University of Chicago and would like to make academic babies with it for all four quarters. Fingers crossed for good financial aid, though I know that probably won't be the case. I don't think I got a scholarship. To all those who didn't get in, gluck with your other schools. No matter where you end up, you will flourish from your own accord and not from the place at which you end up.

[ size=+2][ color=green][ b]Decision:Accepted [ /b][ /color][ /size]

Stats:
• SAT I (by section): 720M 800CR 730W (/2250)
• SAT IIs: 770 Math IIC, 720 Bio, [600 Spanish, 650 Lit (oops - didn't study - fue una tonta)
• ACT: N/A
• APs: Didn't Send
• IBs: N/A
• GPA: 3.9 UW
• Rank: N/A
• Other stats: State Environmental Award, Science Medals, Researcher for multiple years

Subjective:
• ECs listed on app: Environmental Club, Leadership organization, Science Olympiad, Community Service Tutor, All-State Musician
• Job/Work Experience: 4 Years of 8 hours a week - need money for college
• Essays (subject and responses): main essay (live the question essay) very good; optional ones (very funny and showed I could take risks and was very U of C specific)
• Teacher Recs: bio teacher good, english teacher good
• Counselor Rec: hopefully good
• Applied on: 3 hours before RD deadline...yes procrastination
• Hook (if any): Essays, un poco legacy, strong signs of activism, curiosity, and value of education

Location/Person:
• State or Country: IL
• School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): public, competitive
• Ethnicity: Other (did not list)
• Gender: F

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
I know what it feels like to be rejected - I was pwned EA by Yale - straight out rejected. I just wanted to say for those waitlisted or denied, it is their loss to not have you! Prove it in your undergraduate career that they were idiotas My heart knows how you feel. I'm very sorry.

For class 2013 - I hope the FA package will be kind enough to let me be a part of such a passionate and quirky group of undergraduates. I am very grateful for the opportunity.

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:
  • SAT I (by section): 800/800/800/12/80 single session
  • SAT IIs: Chemistry 800, Mathematics 2 800, U.S. History 800, Physics 800 (physics not taken in time to submit, though)
  • ACT: 36/36/36/35(sci)/10 single session, 36/36/36/36/10 superscored
  • APs: Five 5s (several self-studied), taking another five this year (several self-studied)
  • IBs: N/A
  • GPA: 4.000 unweighted
  • Rank: 1 of about 200
  • Other stats: AMC12 ~110, AIME 5 (I don't think I submitted these, though)
Subjective:
  • ECs listed on app: Five or six with solid leadership (President, VP, etc. -- involved in starting at least two major ones), another five more minor involvements (due more to lack of time than any attempt at resume-padding)
  • Job/Work Experience: Two years in IT
  • Essays (subject and responses): Created in about two hours, using some old drafts that I had put together roughly three months earlier for my MIT application but never used.
  • Teacher Recs: All good, one spectacular
  • Counselor Rec: Excellent
  • Applied on: Literally a few minutes from the deadline
  • Hook (if any): Doubtful
Location/Person:
  • Region: Midwest
  • School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): public, about 1000 students
  • Ethnicity: Did not report (Caucasian)
  • Gender: Male
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Hoping for one of the merit scholarships -- Chicago's need-based financial aid application was by far the most invasive of any top school to which I applied, and this makes it seem unlikely that I will receive a comparable offer.

^^shempi, i've been thinking the same thing. A LOT of ridiculously qualified candidates got rejected or waitlisted, but I got accepted! i'm still trying to wrap my head how I got in, and these other amazing applicants didn't, i don't know, it's all very confusing.

Decision: WAITLISTED

Stats:
  • SAT I (by section): 2050 (690 CR 680 Math 710 Writing [highest from two sittings])
  • SAT IIs: horrible, not worth mentioning.
  • ACT: 32
  • APs: AP English (3), AP Psych, AP Euro, AP English Lit, AP Spanish Language (all As)
  • IBs:
  • GPA: 4.3 weighted, 3.9 unweighted
  • Rank: school doesn't rank
  • Other stats:
Subjective:
  • ECs listed on app: Varsity crew (4 years), 200+ hour volunteer work, NHS, assorted clubs and things.
  • Job/Work Experience: Currently working at real estate agency (1 yr), school snack bar (2 years)
  • Essays (subject and responses): all pretty solid. Common app was my favorite, about my years on crew (not your typical sports essay), created my own prompt, supplemental on e.e. cummings written in the style of e.e. cummings. I loved all my essays, I feel like these saved me from the rejected list.
  • Teacher Recs: Favorable but nothing stellar. An amazing (as in, unbelievably complimentary) from my crew coach of 4 years.
  • Counselor Rec: Great.
  • Applied on: RD?
  • Hook (if any): from Arizona, not a lot of applicants from my school. Otherwise, not much-- probably my essays and supplemental rec.
Location/Person:
  • State or Country: AZ
  • School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): extremely competitive Catholic all-girls preparatory school; sends several girls to Ivy's each year.
  • Ethnicity: Caucasian
  • Gender: Female
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
I'm honestly really happy. I was expecting the worst, and though I know my chances aren't favorable, I'm staying on the wait list. I'm a little bummed to not be able to use the big green text, but flattered, actually, that such an elite school liked me enough to keep me on the list. I just got flat-out rejected from GW, so it feels pretty good!
