UChicago vs. UCSD

I have to decide within the next 24 hours if I wish to attend UChicago or UCSD...I'm extremely torn. I will be paying about 20,000$ more in Chicago and I will be majoring in physics. At UCSD, I will be majoring in Electrical Engineering. I love both subjects but I'm uncertain about the job prospects after majoring in physics. Any insight at this point will be helpful. Thanks,

flux

The educational experience of UCSD and UofC are night and day. The type of education one gets will be quite different at each. UCSD is primarily lecture with many hundreds of students in the class. One will find Chicago more intimate and much more discussion oriented with much smaller class size. I recently asked a UCSD junior if he had taken a class small in size. He said he had one right now (this was last Spring), I asked what was the number of students, he said, "Oh, about 80." I am sure there are exceptions, but that is probably what they are, exceptions. UCSD has an excellent faculty and is gaining a wonderful reputation in the sciences, and some like lectures as a primary format for learning. You can also purchase notes for most classes shortly after a lecture. At Chicago, you will have the Core, and be challenged across many disciplines, sometimes at the same time. Try and visualize yourself in each environment what is the academic experience you are after? As for jobs, if you do well at Chicago in Physics, the jobs will be there.

Like idad said, night and day. But I will add that while not nearly as prestigious as UChicago, UCSD will open doors too. It really comes down to the environment you're suited for...personally, UChicago seems like it would have been a little too intense for me, but I wouldn't know firsthand.

The good news is that I'm sure you'll be fine no matter where you go. Just do well, make connections, and reap the benefits.
