Has any (or their S or D) attended the Cincinnatus Competition? What type of group activity did they have to do? I live nearby, but I can't decide if I should attend. I'm a national merit semifinalist, which means I would be able to receive the UCl21 scholarship (tuition and room) if I advance. Apparently, one does not have to attend Cincinnatus to advance, and the only additional scholarship they could receive was if they were to receive the full ride, which would be unlikely. However, I can't decide if I should attend to have another look at the school and have options in case I don't advance to a finalist. I only live about an hour away.

Also, I always hear people say UC is "in a bad area"? How unsafe is it really?

Frankly, You don't need to go since gettnig a full ride is almost impossible. However, some of the activities are fun, and it will give you more of an inside look at the school.

As for safety, my daughter attends DAAP there. Although all schools have problems, I don't know of any on campus problems. In fact,the campus is rather safe.

Cincinnati is a city school with a campus. If you go off campus, you do need to be more careful. Certain directions are safe,such as where the fraternities and sororities are located. Other locations are a bit run down, and you need to be careful. Overall, it isn't that bad.

Three of my daughters friends are Cincinnatus Award winners. My daughter was fortunate enough to win the Foundars Award. From what I understand the small group challenge changes each year, but it will be some type of problem solving activity. You will also be observed during the activity - not sure what they're looking for - probably to see what type of role you take in a group of peers as well as whether your input makes sense.

I agree with Taxguy on the safety issue. You are in a city, but the campus is safe. It is not near as bad as you may hear - probably from those who are uninformed.

cuchara, I agree with taxguy & NWOhiomom. My son attended the Cincinnatus and found it worthwhile. He met many of the students who have been in his DAAP studio and other classes. He hasn't had a problem with safety or has known anyone who has. He lives about 10 minutes off campus and is careful where he goes, like anyone should be who lives in a city.

If you only live an hour away, go. You seem somewhat apathetic about UC so maybe another visit and some interaction will help you make a decision.

From my experience with Cincinnatus (I have a few friends who either won or came very close to doing so), volunteering is a major component used in determining the winners. If you're the kind of person who, since 8th grade, has spent a few hours of every weekend tutoring at inner-city schools, or if you've been traveling to South America every summer to build playgrounds and shelters, I'd say you have a very strong chance.

I was mugged while I was an undergrad at UC. My advice? The farther south/east of campus you go, the more attention you should pay to your safety and surroundings.
