I'm not much of a partier. On most weekends, are there things to do other than party? Are there other people not partying?

My son is not there yet, but we also asked this question of a lot of people, since he in not a major "partier". Apparently, there are lots of other things to do. Check out the shool's website. There are currently some listing of trips to ballgames, hockey games, NYC for theatre, ski trips etc., not to mention student ctivities council run conserts and other shows on campus. They had Conan O'Brian this year. I'm sure with the 16,000 undergrads they have, you'll find many who enjoy these other activities as well.

I think you will find plenty to do. My son is not a partier either, and he has had no trouble in finding kindred spirits for friends.

i had a lot of trouble finding other things to do besides go to a party...there are 'activities' like what kis360 said but you have to pay for all of them and not that many people go. i had friends who didn't party first semester but most of them get into it eventually so that was hard too. its also very difficult to do anything without a car because anything off campus you can't really walk to

I never had a hard time finding stuff to do. I don't think a couple bucks for a movie is too expensive and I'm on a real tight budget. SCPAB has lots of stuff to do and so do other clubs and such. You just have to open your eyes!

What might a typical Friday or Saturday night be?

I once visited the campus area on a Friday evening and Saturday (because my son is admitted, too). But I don't FULLY know what exactly the partying scenes are? Do you all just refer to student groups staying together in restaurants & cafeteria ,etc for example in Main East Street, drink a cup or 2 of beers and laughing and speaking loudly (with some smoking too)?

Please tell me how the parties are? Where are they? Are they really bad things for the students?

SCPAB is kind of lame... no offense. its not for everyone. if you like seeing bands and some pretty awful local comedians then great - do scpab. but trust me i did open my eyes popsicle and there wasn't much for me, personally. maybe for others there are.

all the parties are in the houses on cleveland and other streets. i would bet its a lot more than a cup or two of beers and there's a lot of dancing and basic drunkness. and there's a lot of pot and some other drugs too. my first day at delaware a student overdosed and died in her dorm room.

Not a partier myself; quite disappointed in the night-life at UD. I probably would've been better off in a different dorm because I hate the people that I'm living with (in the building itself; not my room). I love my classes and professors, just not the social aspect. The only reason why I'm not transferring is because of the beauty of the campus & academics. I don't think going through the whole transfer process would be worth it just for a better social life; I'm hoping next semester I'll meet better people who don't want to drink until they vomit every night. **Conan O'Brien did not come to UD whoever posted that above, not trying to sound rude. I think you're thinking of Jon Stewart? (I LOVE Conan O'Brien that would be pretty cool if he did come here).

Freshmen do not have a choice in their dorm assignment.

I mean, honestly, it all depends on the type of people living in your dorm. I think I happen to live with some "bad apples," but there's no real way to get around that your freshmen year.

just out of curiosity, are there any clubs within a reasonable distance of UDel? I visited the school and the general area seemed kind of ..suburban.. so im not expecting tons of stuff but maybe a bit farther away from school? Its just that i generally prefer a club/bar to the general sort of house party/kegger type thing that is common amongst college students. i realize however that in the U.S, being under 21 will make getting into these places less likely for me than what im used to but i just thought id ask since most people here only seem to be talking about general house partys and that sort of thing.

theres definitely things to do besides "party".... the ice skating rink is open late on weekends and in the beginning of the semester there are movies out on the green. Theres always going to be that slim majority of students that stay in on the weekends, and they generally tend to gravitate together and do things like watch movies in ones room instead of going out to party. Theres also a movie theater and bowling alley walking distance to the campus and athletic fields everywhere for non-partying alternatives. Thursday nights there will ALWAYS be people around the dorm either studying or just trying to take it easy for early classes the next day, but the weekends are MUCH quieter on friday and saturday nights. Having just finished freshman year at the school, i can confidently say it is UNHEALTHY to stay in and not try to go out party and enjoy yourselves on the weekend. Freshman year is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet people from all over the country and its absurd to pass that up and not go out at night.

and to nataliercoley....... the majority of parties on campus are house parties unless you are 21. DO NOT TRY USING A FAKE YOU'LL END UP IN JAIL NO MATTER HOW GOOD IT IS. There are very sporadic bus trips to philly/willmington that happen maybe once or twice a semester, but the great majority of the trips to bars and clubs are taken by members of Greek Life or Sporting teams ONLY. Get used to house parties until you are 21, and then you can enjoy Kates and Deerpark, the two bars close to campus
