computer lock - anything else I'm not thinking of -sopranodad

ok. sopranodad. thank you once again. so I ordered the hp printer, got the 11 x 11 dry erase board today and ordered the towel things from amazon. So now you mention a computer lock, another something I had not even thought about. What kind of computer lock? The brand, model and any other infomation would be appreciate. I looked at the apple site and I dont know which one to get... I looked at the alphabetical list of what to buy and think we are covered at this point but if anyone has any other suggestions of things I might not be thinking about (since the closest city to Newark is Siberia and if we don't provide EVERYTHING for our college age children they will be lost...) please let me know. thanks again for all the help!

I got the Kesington combosaver Notebook lock from Amazon but you may want to go to staples so you get it in time for school. It was 20$ish. The only oher annoying thing you may want to get is a 25 foot ethernet cable for the lap top Amazon has them for about 6$. You will also need a cable for the tv but I'm waiting on that one. Hope this helps Lucky and Blue. Was there a nice greeter today at walmart?

thanks once again. already got the ethernet cable and was not aware that we need a cable for the tv. i guess we can get that there. I will try to get the lock now. The greeter at walmart today did not look like a happy greeter. she looked rather ****ed off. back to amazon.com for me. thanks again. if you think of anything else, please let me know...

Sopranodad819,

The Kensington lock you got from Amazon, was it model number K64560US? I saw it there but when read reviews a lot of people said they had trouble setting the combination, etc. There were also a couple of other models (also Kensington) but similar comments. Did you/your child try out the lock yet? I already bought one from Bed Bath & Beyond that was a total piece of junk and had to return it. I am leery now to buy another online and have problem and go through inconvenience of returning.

Yes that's the one K64560US she did have some trouble turning the numbers on the lock but after a few attempts she mastered it. It's not super high security but a deterent.

Staples has the Targus Defcon CL on sale for $14.99 this week, which is a very good price. When I've looked at these in the past, it always seemed to be one of the best (I had a spare one at home that my son will use). Remember that the cable will not prevent someone from stealing the computer if they really want to. As you said, it is merely a deterrent to make them move onto an easier mark.

It looks pretty much like a Kensington. Apple sells the Kensington but the reviews are less than stellar. It seems that there is a problem fitting them in the unibody MacBookPros. I wonder if there is the same problem with the Targus Defcom. We are going to go with Lo-Jack.

I don't really think there is much of a need for a computer lock, unless you think your roommate is going to steal your computer. The dorms are practically impossible to break into (provided that you lock your door) so if someone did find a way to smash down the door I doubt a computer lock would be a deterrent at all. I think it would be better to save the $20 and remember to lock your door when you leave the room.
