boysx3 - I am having a kind of difficult time in understanding DU's core curriculum and how long it is before students are able to take classes in their major area of interest. Any insight on that one?

The core curriculum is very flexible and students can take all kinds of classes to satisfy requirements....almost always they can find something they are interested in to fulfill a requirement. He made sure to start taking classes in potential majors right from the start....his advisor said that is the best way to discover if you like the major or not. For this reason, he was urged to distribute his gen ed classes over the four years, leaving room for classes of specific interest to him right from the beginning.

The usual class load is 4 classes/quarter, and my son started taking things he liked on day 1. He really liked quarters because he could finish up something he did not love (physical science!) without prolonging his agony. He also liked quarters because the urge to procrastinate never kicked in.

moda, what schools is your D considering? Is she leaning in any particular direction yet?
Jayson, I hope your son enjoys his visit!

Sorry to bring this thread back to life, but am interested in hearing some information from those that got merit money from DU...what seems to be the requirements to get any? My son will likely have an unweighted GPA in the 3.4-3.5 range, and ACT score of 32. His SAT scores so far are 1870, but will be retaking. Do we have any hope of getting some merit aid?

It's really hard to figure out in your case.

The 32 might shake loose some merit money, but the 3.4-3.5 gpa is merely average, so it's hard to tell.

I would strike up a relationship with the admissions rep for your area....and once he is in love with your student, then bring up the question directly.
