How is the campus atmosphere?

I am a junior right now in Atlanta and I have been looking into colleges. I visited the campus in seventh grade but you can imagine how long ago that was. I like the bulldog pride and the academic profile of UGA but I have further questions concerning the campus:

1. Is the campus urban, surburban, or rural? (I would like a university where I can walk through quads to get to my classes and hang out on the lawns without choking from automobile fumes.)

2. I like the demographic percentages I saw on collegeboard.com. I am bi-racial and I welcome diversity and intergration. Are the students welcome to different cultures or does everyone cling to the familiar?

3. As a freshman, will most of my classes be lecture-size or high school classroom size? I prefer lecture size.

4. As a freshman, is it better to live in a dorm on campus to meet people? Or an apartment?

5. How is the overall attitude of the student body, faculty, and administrators? Do they welcome students from Atlanta?

6. What is the social scene really like in Athens?

I'll be a junior this fall, and I absolutely love it at UGA.

1. Is the campus urban, surburban, or rural? (I would like a university where I can walk through quads to get to my classes and hang out on the lawns without choking from automobile fumes.)

UGA is in the heart of Athens. This is definitely a suburban area with plenty of quads for you to frolic in between classes.

2. I like the demographic percentages I saw on collegeboard.com. I am bi-racial and I welcome diversity and intergration. Are the students welcome to different cultures or does everyone cling to the familiar?

UGA definitely has the stereotype of white, upper-middle class kids, but there is diversity and everyone I know has friends from all different races and cultures.

3. As a freshman, will most of my classes be lecture-size or high school classroom size? I prefer lecture size.

Depends really. I didn't have a 300+ size lecture until fall of my sophomore year, but most freshmen do have a couple large lectures.

4. As a freshman, is it better to live in a dorm on campus to meet people? Or an apartment?

UGA requires you to live on campus your first year. Even if they didn't, I'd recommend it 100% because if it wasn't for the dorm, I wouldn't have half the friends I do today. Most of your best moments of freshman year will come from those little cramped rooms.

5. How is the overall attitude of the student body, faculty, and administrators? Do they welcome students from Atlanta?

Majority of the students are from the Atlanta area, so don't worry about that.

6. What is the social scene really like in Athens?

Unbeatable. If your looking into going greek, you'll fit in just fine here in Athens. Downtown is electric.

I'd agree with what MC said. Just to add...

The campus is suburban, but most of the nice green space is found on north campus. It's a little harder to find nice green space in south campus (science major territory), but we do have some nice places to hand out.

As for diversity, it just depends. I would say most people do stick to the familiar, but you can find diversity if you look hard enough.

Class size is variable. Most intro classes will be large lecture classes. Others will be smaller. It all depends. If you get into the honors program, you can take honors classes where the classes are small (under 25 students).

The social scene is what you make of it. I got through almost three years of school at UGA without doing much drinking or doing partying (I kinda started doing it a little more near the end of my 3rd year because my friends were turning 21, but that's a different story). Most of my friends and I were content going out for dinner then coming back to the apartment and hanging out there. If the partying scene isn't your scene, then there are plenty of things here to keep you busy. If it is your scene, UGA will seem like heaven. Just make sure you balance partying and studying. You can get swept up in all the hype about partying, but make sure you realize the reason why you're there is to get an education. [/end motherly lecture]

You were really concerned that the flagship university of the state might be hostile toward Atlantans (who make up half the population of the state)???

hey guys, I am from PA but had a question for you. UGA is listed as a commuter campus on college board, is that true? I didn't think it was but thought I should ask anyway.

If commuter campus = community college, the answer is no. It's one of the major colleges in GA.

Perhaps it's the percentage of students that live on campus and rather most students are mandated to live on campus first or second year.
