| Hi Lisa,
My daughter's experience has been very positive. She has had some really good role's and has had the opportunity to do a lot of choreography for the shows. She is a strong dancer and has really enjoyed the dance classes as the dance instructors are really good. The vocal instructors have also been first rate. Each student has a voice teacher and a vocal coach with whom he/she has private lessons with each week. The acting component is also good with very excellent acting teachers. As for class size I am not sure about that. I do know the year my daughter started the freshman class was pretty large and they have reduced it over the last few years. In terms of competitiveness, the talent pool I have seen is pretty impressive. The MT's are all very close and very supportive of each other, my daughter has made life long friends as a result of attending Hartt. They do have a New York showcase for the musical theater majors and a Los Angeles showcase for the actor trainers. Since my daughter plans on moving back to Southern California after graduation she has elected to showcase in Los Angeles in May prior to graduation. This last summer she auditioned for summer stock and landed a great summer job in Pennsylvannia where they put up 4 productions in a great little theater. Three other Hartt students (all male) were also hired by the theater and they all lived in residence with other MT students from all over the country and had a blast, it was a great experience. Good luck with your search, it is hard to believe it has been four years already, it seems just like yesterday we were flying back for the beginning of her freshman year!

| Hartt just finished it's main stage Spring Musical which was "Sweeney Todd". They typically do one main stage perfomance in the Lincoln Theater each Fall and Spring. They also do several smaller productions, most often original musicals each semester. If you go to their website www.hartford.edu you can find the calendar information for the Hartt school. |

| Quick note- I just saw Hartt's production of Sweeney, and it was really amazing. I was completely impresssed from the aspects of the music, sets, costumes, and, especially the performers themselves.
I have to say, in general, Hartt was one school I didn't really have any interest in attending, but every time I visit, my oppinion goes up. My audition gave me a very good vibe and, as I said, I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the production.
In regards to the dorms, I found them pretty disgusting when I visited, one of the biggest turn-offs for me, but my friend who is a jazz guitarist absolutely loves it there, so I suppose it's not a huge issue. One thing that I've seen commented on that she has said repeatedly (as she recruits me ;D) is that the mt students couldn't be closer and they have an amazing bond.
Also, my private voice teacher teaches voice to musical theater students at Hartt and she is a phenominal teacher, so if the other teachers are as good as she is, the training must be pretty good. |

| gluemom's D gluemom - My D and I visited Hartt yesterday and want to tell you that we met your lovely and talented daughter. All of the students we met at Hartt were so friendly they made my D feel right at home. We were fortunate to observe an acting class in which your D performed a scene with an another student. We really enjoyed watching them. Your D is truly talented ( great comedic timing!) and I loved the interaction between the actors. I am sure she will go far.
Pass on our thanks to her and a huge BRAVO to the sophmore class at Hartt MT! Talented kids who are also nice people>

| Evasmom & D Hi Evasmom & D - Thank you for your kind words - it makes a mom proud! My D was home this past weekend for Easter and told us about your visit to Hartt. Your fortunate that you found this site prior to college admissions - it is so helpful. We didn't find it until D's auditions were done. Thankfully it all worked out just fine for her. She's loving her time at Hartt and feels she is getting excellent training and made the right choice. She wanted me to tell you that if you or Eva have any questions, feel free to ask and she will get back to you.
I read on another thread that your D was accepted to CMU's summer program - congratulations. Sounds like a great program - lots of work and lots of fun!
Again, thank you! |

| Hey....yeah I applied to the Hartt School of Music. I actually take lessons there from the community division. I am a senior in high school and am auditioning for it. It has a very good reputation and is one of the major fine arts colleges in new england. I live here in connecticut about 10-15 minutes away and don't see why people would bash it. Connecticut has extreme seasons, it isnt like the place is a dump. The buildings are very old so mabey the whole old stone/ gray cold skys gave you that idea or something.
Also keep in mind that there arent really any good ways to rate performing arts colleges too so comparing them can be difficult. The University of hartford is made up of a bunch of smaller colleges, The Hartford Arts School, The Hartt School(drama, dance, music,) The Barney School of Businuss, and a few others i think. The dorms for freshmen arent as nice as the ones for upper classmen, they have some really nice ones for them, and off campus housing options. Fine arts people get a specific dorm complex that is nicer than the other freshmen dorms.
The hartt school of music isnt Juillard, but it is still a lot better than many other colleges music programs. It is very expensive....since it is a private school so get financial aid and scholerships if you can. Also keep in mind if you arent from connecticut dont judge the university on the area around it like the north end of hartford....that is just a section connecticut is a nice state especially outside of the hartford area. The campus is safe even though it is near some bad areas of connecticut.
A quick list of fine arts schools worth looking into
- Juilliard (good luck getting in! 8% acceptance rate only 800 people actually attend the school if you combine undergrad/grad school. )
- Hartt School/ The Hartford Art School (both part of UHA)
- Boston Conservatory
- New England Conservatory |

| Acceptance Rate Anyone know the stats on Hartt's acceptance rate? I usually ask for the number who apply (to MT), the number of offers they make, and the number of students who accept/matriculate. So when you say a school's rate is 2%, is that the # applicants/# in the program? |

| Usually when acceptance rates are given, they refer to what percentage were accepted of those who applied, and NOT to how many actually matriculate.
Example....if a school auditions 400 students and accepts 40 students to yield 20 slots in the class, the acceptance rate is stated as 10%, even though 5% will actually enter the freshman class. In fact, it is a misconception when some people will say, as in my example, "400 auditioned and they only take 20!" because they know that 20 are in the freshman class, but truly the school accepted 40 to get those 20. This is just an example and there is great variation. However, acceptance rates mean admit rate, not based on how many slots are available or how many matriculate. |

| Hartt Theatre Acceptance Rate
This year Hartt had a little over 400 students audition for the Musical Theatre and Actor Training programs. We accepted about 60 students to each program. Each year we look for a class of no more than 25 MT students and 15 AT students. |
