I could possibly be attending University of Iowa next fall but have not registered for housing since I'am unsure if I will be attending and I have already mistakenly accepted admission offer. Should I register for housing now, wait until I hear from more schools or what? I know I wouldn't want to live in Mayflower if I was to attend Iowa as it is too far from the campus itself.

If I were you, I would call the admissions office immediately and say that you are still unsure about attending. I do believe that you can apply for housing before accepting your offer of admission, though. You might want to ask them about that, too.

I'm also still waiting for decisions from other colleges, and even though I'm still not sure if I'm going, I was going to ask my school counselor if U of I lets you apply for housing before accepting their admission. Which residence halls do you want to apply to? I'm leaning toward Daum and Burge.

Oh I'm not sure, I just know a definate no to Mayflower. I once had Currier high but found out very few freshmen are in the hall, as it is mostly a residential hall for upperclassmen. I also read that Mayflower ( eventhough its apartment style) houses the mainly freshmen. I like Daum, Burge, Hillcrest; Slater, Reinow and Stanley I may like also... haven't sought much into it yet.

You can apply for housing with out accepting. Look at the universities site. They also sent information with you acceptance letter.

I sent my housing app into Iowa even though I might not attend. If I dont get accepted to UW-Madison I will be attending Iowa next fall. You should probably get that in ASAP though. I had hillcrest, burge, then currier listed as my favorite dorms.

it costs $120 to apply for housing at uiowa, and if you choose not to attend you get refunded $100 of that. So its really only $20 to ensure that you end up where you want if you choose to attend.

I'm still unsure if I will be attending University of Iowa as I will have to see my financial aid offered, and possibly finaicial aid offered if accepted into additional schools; with that said: is housing is guaranteed for freshmen? I do not plan to deposit for housing because I do not know if I will be attending. Though I did already mistakenly accepted admission offer.

Anyone able to give a insider on Iowa housing? Although I am still unsure on what school I'll be attending, with Iowa being likely I was recently sent a reminder in the mail on how housing goes quick and best to sign up today while still open to refund if you decide not to attend. I'm nervous that if Iowa is where I do attend all the housing will be gone or I'll end up in a unpleasent dorm. So I really need insider information on the dorms before signing up for my top three.

Depends on what you want. Look online at all the different things each offers. From what I've heard currier hillcrest and burge are the most popular but it's really hard to go wrong I think

Just back from a visit Iowa with my D -- we both really liked the campus and it is now one of her favorites. She likes the location of the east side dorms close to the Pentacrest (Currier, Stanley and Burge) where most of her classes will be. I know there are buses, but on the day we were there, the wind was really howling when walking across the river, and I'd prefer she not need to cross the river frequently at night. In addition she is not a cold weather person and guessing she will need every minute to get to classes on time.

So I'm thinking she should request only east side dorms. Can anyone comment on the trade-offs if she winds up getting assigned to someplace like Hillcrest or Slater across the river, vs the closer east side dorms?

rwehavingfunyet, I think you'll be hard-pressed to see much on this forum from current Iowa students. I am also a parent of a prospective and can only share my observations which are no more "insider" than yours but might help some. First, housing is first-come first-served and applying now definitely puts you back in the queue. I would apply for housing immediately, knowing that you'll get all but $20 of your deposit back if your daughter goes elsewhere.

As for east vs. west, my distinct impression is the same as yours. Freshmen gravitate towards east side dorms, Burge especially. Beyond that, Iowa has a fair number of "living learning" communities and Quiet House designations which may help her further if she has specific interests. For my son, we like Honors House as it is adjacent to the Blank Honors Center, which funtions like a mini-union for honors students. Your daughter can petition into honors even is she wasn't invited - they're quite open to it and it requires only a quick email.

I know this isn't much. If I were in your shoes, esp. given the late date, I'd phone the admissions office to get the lay of the land. Your choices may be limited. Best of luck.

Thank you, beastman...my D did apply for housing a couple of weeks ago, knowing that she could still make changes up to May 1. She listed Stanley, Hillcrest, Burge, and Currier (and Healthy Living and Quiet House LLCs). Quiet House is in Stanley. I am mainly wondering if she should move Hillcrest to the back of the list and Quiet House to #1, in an attempt to get onto the east side. I agree that housing apps should be in ASAP if not submitted already.

funyet - I guess I'd make the switch, but I'd also phone housing as they might give you some insight that you hadn't thought of. Not sure if you'd get an actual human being interested in helping or not....
