Info/How is the school?

This is for anyone who's visited/or go to school at Mary Wash. What is the school like? The people? Town? What do you like/dislike? And whatever else you would like to add about it. Thanks!

My D goes there and will be a senior this fall. I don't know what to say to what is the school like. It's a nice size, beautiful campus, excellent teachers. The town is OK, there is a historic area with little shops and restaurants within walking distance of the campus and there is a large retail area further out with any eatery or retail chain you could want. DC is a train ride away.

Academics are fairly rigorous. D knows a good number of students who have run into academic problems BUT the faculty are mostly helpful, caring, and fair.

Housing has been upgraded so some of the dorms are not the dumps they once were. There are also apartments. Food is, well, college dining hall food.

Our biggest gripes involve administrative stuff. Billing has messed up every single semester. Fin. Aid. has messed up almost that often. D has an activity that requires her to come before classes start, stay over spring break, come back early from Christmas, etc. Every. Single. Time. Security has failed to code her housing so that she can get in.

Where are you from?

I'm not sure why anyone would pay out of state tuition for UMW unless you want a specific program that is hard to find, like historical preservation. If money is no object and you want to be out of NY I'd keep looking.

I go to Mary Washington! A good amount of the buildings are undergoing renovations this summer and into the fall semester - turning out beautifully! The new gym facilities are great as is our new concert hall!! Classes are rigorous but the teachers are relate-able, accessible and interesting people. I have a great deal of friends from Mary Washington after just one semester - some of the best people you'll ever meet. I turned down other good choices for schooling to go to Mary Washington because of the beauty of the campus and the guarantee I felt from the academics!

Yes- the admissions/financial aid office can be really pesky sometimes trust me I know. But all in all, not a huge deal. The rest of the campus' positives make up for it!
