| Very helpful explanation, lindz. Much appreciated. (Incidentally, I'm a parent. My son is benefiting tremendously from your experience but won't log onto CC himself.) |

Thanks, lindz. Another question about what goes on at freshman orientation. Do the students meet in groups with an advisor or one on one? If groups, what size? How much opportunity is there to get your individual questions answered? A question for someone in scholars: are you expected to take five 3-credit courses first semester plus the colloquium? What if you've already met some of the first semester requirements? Are you supposed to take something else instead or can you take fewer than 16 credits?
| The advising process at Orientation differs slightly by each academic college...some provide advising before students log into testudo and look at classes, and some schools, like engineering will have the students get a general idea of what they need to take, then fill out a sheet with the courses they want, and then show it to the advisor. If you want to PM me with your son's college, if I have the procedure sheet already (we're working on writing them atm)...I could fill you in on how the day will go specific to your son's major. |

| From the other side of orientation:
We (the staff) just moved into our summer apartments today, and on Tuesday we're starting the final week of training before our first program on June 2nd. Our staff has had an entire semester of preparing for Orientation, so we're all really excited to see and work with all of you in the coming months. As always, if you have any questions about Orientation, you can post or PM me, or call the Orientation office at 301-314-8217 M-F 830-430.
I'm sooooo excited for the summer (My little brother is coming through orientation 6/16, which also happens to be my birthday! Welcome to Maryland!
Now...gotta finish unpacking. |

| My son's orientation is July l4 and l5. We are all going down and my husband and I are going to the one day parent orientation. Would someone tell me what UNIV100 is? Also, my son is in the Robert Smith business school with an undeclared business major. Should he be checking out the courses from the catalogue now? Thanks |

| He doesn't have to be, but it can never hurt to come to Orientation already a little educated. |

| ottobar, don't know if you've got the handouts yet from the Smith School that lay out the suggested 4-year plan. Regardless of major, your son will be encouraged to take the following during his first semester: Engl 101 if not exempt, Math 220 or as placed, Econ 200, CORE class, and a lower level elective. |

| I was just curious as to how the advising process will go during orientation. When we meet with our advisors for the first time are we going to be selecting classes right then or do we go over various options and then make selections at a different time. I'm just not sure how knowledgeable I should be before orientation about what classes I need to take and what classes are available for me to take.
Im going to be at orientation next Monday and Tuesday and I am in the Merrill College of Journalism. |

| On Monday you will learn about all the requirements for your major and learn how to use the system for registration, and then you are given the night to mull over your options so that you can come in the next day (starting at 9:30) prepared for registration. You will probably be done advising around 11:30-12:00 depending on how your computer lab session goes. |

| You will be registering for classes when you meet with your advisor so arrive prepared. Know which AP credits you've earned if applicable. Know which CORE requirements you may have satisfied through your standardized test scores if applicable. |

| The only orientation date that I am capable of going to are the last few dates in Aug (i am out of the country and did not plan for orientation). Would I have a very limited selection of classes when I register? |

| Quite possibly so have several backups planned. Study the CORE requirements table and try to select several options that would satisfy an individual requirement. |
