for the BFA Musical Theatre audition i heard there is a 'music theory assessment' could you please describe what this entails? Do I have to be able to play piano or sight read?

The day my S was there it was a one-sheet written "test." Most of the auditionees could answer only one or two questions. S drew smiley faces all over it. According to the Miami staff, it was just for placement in theory class for the fall and does not affect your acceptance.

D got her letter from admissions yesterday. She auditioned for MT. The letter said she was waitlisted. Does anyone kinow if this means waitlisted academically or waitlisted for MT? How likely is it to come off the waitlist?

My daughter got her acceptance to the university and a scholarship for academics this past week by e-mail. She auditioned for BFA acting at Chicago unifieds. When we called to see what she had been admitted for we were told that the theater department had not released it admits yet so they could not tell us if she was in the BFA program. The admissions person did say she would be admitted to the BA program.. She said she would call us back but we have not heard from her yet...I know it is a busy time but this is frustrating...

My D was accepted to the University of Miami's Frost School of Music for the BM in Musical Theatre with Options. Came by regular mail today in a thin envelope. The letter states that the Frost School sends this acceptance to the Office of Undergraduate Admission where her file will be reviewed and we will be notified of her academic acceptance (hopefully) within two weeks. I do not know how admissions works for the BFAs in Musical Theatre at Miami. This is the music school side of Miami's MT program -- the Bachelor of Music degree for MT.

The BM in MT Degree with Options is through the Frost School of Music. 6 are accepted into the BM in MT degree in Frost (3 girls; 3 boys) and 12 are accepted into the BM in MT w/Options in Frost (6 boys; 6 girls). (There are also 6 more students in the Department of Theatre Arts BFA which are combined with the BM in MTs -- this is w/out options.) A bit confusing.

BM in MT is a full music major in addition to acting, dance, voice et al in the conservatory setting in the Theatre Arts program.

BM in MT w/options is a full music major, a full theatre arts major and the flexibility of choosing courses in performance training or technical theatre. This track is ideal for students who want professional training with freedom to take classes of interest beyond the rigid requirements of the BM in MT conservatory. According to the BM in MT w/options acceptance letter, "The BM in MT w/options is an ideal major for a number of students who are Broadway bound."

Basically, the BM w/options gives a student greater flexibility in the curriculum. If you want to be a performer, you can go either way -- with or without options (and depending upon what they accept you for -- it is the same audition -- they place you into one of these in Frost). You can take a broader range of courses with the options degree. With either degree, you are still eligible to audition for Jerry Herman Ring theatre productions as well as performance venues throughout the South Florida area. There are also performing experiences available in both music and theatre with this degree.

Hope that helps. Pulled most of it from the acceptance letter.

D accepted MT with Options

My daughter was accepted to the Frost school MT w/options and the UofMiami academically last week. Nice to have one that's not a safety.

Questions:

1. Have those accepted heard about scholarships? This may be out of our range otherwise.

2. What does anyone know about the level of respect given this program by the MT community?

3. What is the reputation of the University?

4. My first impression is that the University attracts a rather mainstream crowd. Does anyone know if there is a more alternative scene there? Actually any info about the feel of the University and the Frost School of Music would be appreciated. We are feeling rather blind about this program.

Thanks. Though I have been a lurker up till now, this forum has been an invaluable help to us in this crazy process.

Hey treeclimber,

Just to start, I didn't even audition for mt, but for straight vocal perf. I was going to audition for MT but got stuck in traffic and got there too late .

Scholarships are usually mailed early april (I applied and stuff last year but turned it down..foolish me and now I'm trying to transfer back into there)

I do know that the MT program has a great reputation in the southern florida (like regionally miami) area for its great, professional performances (and there are suchhhh good internship opportunities--like Disney, Busch Gardens, etc.)

UM is becoming a prestigious university in recent years. Way back, it was known as like a basketweaving school haha. But, as of this year, the acceptance rate falls probably in the mdi 30's, just to give you an idea. Soo, it's not a bad sdchool! It ranks within (well you probably know) the top 60 universities, having a rank of 54 last year and 52 this year...And it'll continue to climb I'm sure!

About the mainstream crowd...Well, I haven't actually spent enough time at UM to make a judgment completely. However, I do take notice to what you're saying. When I was there last year, I was intimidated by the wealth and this and that. But they actually, once you get past materialism, are very nice people!! Not everybody, like it is in the real world, but a lot are very nice. ESPECIALLY in Frost, people are very supportive, and laid back.
And yeah, there is an alternative scene (well I'm guessing you mean people that aren't wealthy, or at least are down to earth, normal, etc. etc. lol?)

Good luck!! Hope I could help.

thanks jeremybeach

Thanks for you take on things and good luck transferring in. Yes the wealth is a little intimidating. She will go to a local open house and see what she thinks -- wish we could send her to FL to check it out. Also hope for good news on the scholarship front.
