My name is Kelly and I am currently a junior at the University of Miami. I participated in Great Start when I entered the U as a freshman and I had such an amazing time that this year I decided to work on the program as a counselor
Great Start is an overnight program held on 3 different weekends during the summer and is designed for incoming first year commuter students! During Great Start you get to do TONS of stuff! We teach you campus traditions and cheers, you learn about different organizations on campus, we give you tips on how to ease your transition to college as a commuter, and you have the opportunity to ask all your questions about parking, eating, majors, registering for classes, etc! We also have a ridiculous amount of fun! We go in the pool, eat lots of delicious food, play dodgeball and other sports, dance around at the Great Start party, and so much more!
Great Start is where I met so many of my friends! I was able to come in the first day of fall classes a step ahead of the game! I was familiar with the campus, I knew all the basics, and I had friends to hang out with- all because of Great Start!
If you are an incoming freshman commuter student I would definitely recommend this program to you! If you want to register you can just log on to the myUM student portal and look for the Great Start link under "admissions"
