Lady Confused - a somewhat silly question for you. My daughter is very concerned about the quality of the food on campus, which is sort of interesting because she doesn't eat much anyway. Is it really as bad as she hears it is?

Well, it's not HORRIBLE.... in fact, the first couple of weeks she'll probably love it hahah... It's basically what you make of it. There's a ton of variety, and you just have to be creative (it can get really boring though)... You also have "dining dollars" which you can use in the food court when the dining hall gets boring.... I usually eat one of the following in the dining hall: baked ziti, pasta with marinera sauce, sandwiches, wraps, grilled cheese, veggie burgers.... (I'm a vegetarian by the way)... and then the brownies are always really good, and they have icecream...

In the foodcourt there's a range of options from sushi, mexican, really yummy salads, jamba juice and a bunch of other stuff.... there's also a subway on campus where you can use your dining dollars.

check out this website:

Also, I didn't know this until a week ago... but after the first semester you can drop from the 14 meal plan to the 8 meal plan which means you can eat in the dining hall less...

Im thinking about joining a fraternity. Wat do u know about the greek life on campus?
1) is it hard to get in. As in if ur not a super jock ur not getting in?
2) is it any fun? a good way to make friends?
3) Do they have their own houses or they just occupy a floor in a building?

I tried getting into the greek life websitre but it didnt work so i know absoloutely nothing about it.

It's not hard to get in... there's basically a week where you get to know all the fraternities and you pick your favorites, and they pic theirs and then you have bid day... where you find out which one you got into. I've NEVER heard of someone who wasn't able to get in. There are different frats too, that are known for different things.... like one is known for their crazy parties/jocks and another one is more known for academics

2) is it any fun? a good way to make friends?

I'm a girl who is not in one lol so I wouldn't know.... the guys I know that are in them do like it though.... and I think it's much more of a bonding experience for guys than for girls....

It won't be the only way you make friends, and all friendships take effort so don't expect friendships to be handed to you on a silver platter. I know of LOTS of people who aren't in frats who have just as much (if not more) friends.

3) Do they have their own houses or they just occupy a floor in a building?

Frats have their own houses and then they also manipulate housing into making one entire floor of hecht just be members of a particular frat... and then frat brothers also share apartments on campus etc. (there are a TON of members in frats and I doubt they'd all fit comfortably into one house)

Sororities btw do no not have houses because of the serial killer in Gainsville a few years ago........so they were abolished for safety reasons

28,000 is a lot in financial aid, isn't it?

hmmmmmmm, it could be that they're offering you admission in the Spring semester but not in the Fall... (a lot of students drop out after the fall, so then there are extra openings)

Not to intrude on Ladyconfused' thread..sorry, but I thought a parent knowing how UM's financial offers work might be able to shed a little light here:

Is the 28,000 scholarship money awarded with your acceptance letter, or is 28,000 the total amount of your financial aid statement? They are usually two different things. Son recieved his scholarship dollars with acceptance and then sometime in April received the "true" financial aid statement, which not only showed the scholarships dollars, but how the rest of the aid worked in regard to our families EFC. In our case, a combination of loans and grants. You really need to see the whole "plan" before you can make an informed decision regarding costs, etc.

Sorry, it's the Award Letter
Gaped is when your aid package don't meet Cost of Attendance

I got the Full Pell Grant $4310, two small grants w/ 6k in fed. loans along with16k scholarship. I live myself(no parental support)...the school is out of my choice of options. I still used my mothers income and my EFC was zero. I hope my other choices come though
