Transfer Sophmore Year?

I've heard that it's challenging to apply and to be accepted to UMich until after sophomore year. Buuuuut. With the following stats, would I have any luck? Not to say that I am turning a cold shoulder on the college I am attending on the fall. That isn't the case. I was merely captivated by UMich when I visited. I wonder if I should even bother applying, is all.
End of the year stuff: GPA: UW 3.96, W: 5.1. Rank: 8/458. ACT: 31 C - 34/31/33/27. Very active in music/theatre endeavors. I have family that attended UMich. I'm OOS. I took 10 APs during school - 4 junior yr, 6 senior yr. I got 2 4's and 2 5's junior year.

I think my biggest turn off for this year's admission was that I was an intended music person and I focused most of my essays on that without having enough musical merit. I think my grades are solid, minus my ACT which could be better.

My son was accepted after Freshman year at another University. His stats out of High School were similar (his grades were not as good as yours) but he was instate. U of M waited to see one semester of college classes (3.8) before admitting him. His top three choices were Michigan, Michigan and Michigan and he made that clear throughout the process.

I think it helped that he had a defined school within LS&A that he wanted to attend and focused his essays in his transfer application to that school. I would think you have a decent chance and would have guessed you would have made it in directly out of high school given those stats.
