Hey guys, I was fortunate enough to be accepted as a Winter 2013 transfer student to Michigan . I am currently at Berkeley doing CogSci and feel like this school is not a good fit at all for me at all .

I want to know what the main differences were between Michigan and Berkeley (besides the weather of course) so I can be ready before I make the switch.

Some of the things I'd like to know are:

- How hard is it to make friends as a transfer?
- Do winter transfers have a hard time getting into classes?
- Where the hell will I be living if I choose dorms (I heard terrible terrible things about the "North Campus"
- Anything else I should know about

I am a junior and am planning to study abroad next semester. I am looking for someone to sublet my apartment in Landmark which is located on the central campus, less than 5 minutes from the diag. Please let me know if you are interested! The sublet would begin in January.

you are leaving Berkely??? you need to give it some time to really know you dont like it there. I had a friend at WashU and he said he hated it his first year and wanted to leave and now he cannot stop talking about it...

jleemd, I am fairly certain the OP has completed 3 semesters at Cal. Michigan does not usually accept transfers with less than one full year at their initial university.

- It's as hard or as easy as it generally is to make friends anywhere, but I don't expect you'll find it any harder. Put yourself out there and get involved with clubs/groups/etc. for the best experience.

- Pay special attention to the slot you're given to register and be sure to backpack the courses you want (and backpack more than you need) to be prepared to make the best use of your time slot. Umich reserves some spots to attempt to ensure some semblance of equity in terms of course access. In other words, it really depends on your program, but planning ahead and attempting to ask around or check out profs in advance is worthwhile (eg. ratemyprofessor)

- Some people don't like north, others do...it's a little pastoral (eg lots of deer and turkey) but it's really only a short (but often packed) bus ride away from anywhere exciting. There is also a chance you'd be located elsewhere...it truly is a random lottery!

Lots of students do semesters abroad -- you may wish to look into subletting if you think you won't be happy with the "luck of the draw" in terms of housing.
