| Congratulations on South Quad. Great dorm. The rest of the UAE freshmen are coming along nicely. There will be 9 of you this year...out of 19 who were admitted. I intend to get all of you guys together...after my honeymoon! Now that's dedication if I ever saw it! hehe |

| I'd give the nod to Cal over UM solely because of the strength in Engineering/Science. Student caliber is tilted decisively in Cal's favor, IMO. |

| Decisively? Do you have any data to back up your claims? |

| Nothing of the sort, it does tie into the strength in Engineering/Science though. |

| I don't know where you got your data. Here's what Michigan posted on its official website:
Profiles of the freshman class of 2005 (enrolled):
> mid-50% SAT range: 1240-1400 (single sitting)
> mid-50% UW GPA: 3.6-3.9
> 22% with a 4.0 GPA
> 44.4% with 3.9 or higher GPA
Stats for engineering school (admitted) is a bit higher:
> median UW GPA: 3.8
> median SAT: 1380
> median ACT: 30
Michigan just posted the stats for the class of 2006 ( http://www.admissions.umich.edu/fastfacts.html):
> mid-50% SAT: CR 610-720; Math 650-760
> mid-50% UW GPA: 3.7-4.0
> 28% with a 4.0 UW GPA
> 52% with 3.9 or higher UW GPA |

| UCB 2005 Freshman Profile (students.berkeley.edu/admissions/freshmen.asp):
Avg SAT I scores (mid-50%): CR 590-710; Math 630-740
Avg UW GPA: 3.82
Decisively better? |

| Anyone in the engineering business will tell you that Michigan and UCB are peers in engineering. And it's been that way even if you go back 30-40 years ago.
UCB does have an edge in basic sciences. However, there are few schools that are in the same caliber in sciences.
On the other hand, Michigan excels in a number of areas ... like in health and medical disciplines (hence biomedical and live science), music, architecture. |

I am aware of the public perception of both Cal & UMich. |

| GoBlue, my numbers, except for Michigan ACT, were from princeton review. Yours obviously trump them as far as reliability goes. |

| SATs up 90 points in six years at U-M data-crunchers, take note:
(approximate) avg. UM SAT, freshman class yr. 2000, 1280 (source: "Early Admissions Game")
avg. SAT 2004 1305 (SAT Web site 12/14/05)
avg. SAT 2005 1320 (GoBlue81, on this thread)
avg SAT 2006 1370 ( M + CR, UM admissions fast facts)
also, please note the 47% acceptance rate for the '06 freshman class.
p.s. CC proofreaders, please correct the "anyway" in this thread's title to "any way." To read: Is Michigan weak in any way? |
