Hi Guys,

I got admitted to UMich's MSEE program this fall. I'm well aware of the school's prestige and have a strong desire to attend its MSEE program (even if it means giving up the nice California sunshine for ~2 years). The only thing that worries me is my chances of getting a job in silicon valley (or any west coast locations) after graduation.

Am I naive to assume that new grads outside California are at a disadvantage when competing with local grads for jobs? What do you guys think?

Appreciate any solid responses from you guys as I'm still split between Michigan and UC San Diego...Thanks

UCSD is excellent too. That's a tough decision. I know that companies like Intel, Oracle, Google, Cisco, Sun, Microsoft etc... are all among the heaviest recruiters at Michigan's CoE every year. 10% of Michigan Engineers end up working in the West Coast.

This said, is UCSD really considered "local" where Silicon Valley is concerned? Isn't it like a 7 hour drive (1 hour flight) from SD to SF?

Thanks for the reply Alexandre. You are correct about UCSD being a 7 hour drive away from Bay Area (add another 2 hours to get through the notorious LA traffic). But UCSD is still closer to silicon valley and other tech companies (e.g. qualcomm) than ann arbor. Does that automatically mean that students there stand a better chance at getting interviews than their friends at Michigan?

It sounds like from your reply that tech companies from the valley are always actively recruiting Umich students. I guess that's a good sign. I'm wondering if the competition for these tech jobs will be intense among Umich students...
